http://junkyardsam.com/kingcopied
King.com (makers of Candy Crush Saga) recently trademarked the word "Candy" and are now using their legal & financial power against smaller competing companies: Candy Crush Saga developer trademarks 'candy' (Polygon.com) Candy Crush owner King.com wins trademark, immediately starts sending takedowns (Geek.com) It's ironic that King.com is concerned about intellectual property when they so blatantly copied our game Scamperghost with their game "Pac-Avoid" in late 2009. In fact, using "Pac" from Namco's Pac-Man is exactly the same thing they're trying to stop people from doing with their "Candy" trademark!

We were in talks with Lars Jörnow at King.com to license our Scamperghost game. Before the deal was closed (and certainly before any contracts were signed) MaxGames.com made a better offer so we thanked King for considering our game and politely ended our negotiations. King.com (giant company) retaliated against us (two young indie devs) by quickly making a direct clone of our game and almost released it before us! We only got ours out sooner because a friend close with the company contacted us privately to warn us in advance...
There's pictures inside comparing the original with the knock-off. King even ripped off of Pac-Man in the process. :v: [t]http://static.squarespace.com/static/50257676e4b0ac9409ef7f11/t/52e14b1ee4b0e4f622f385c6/1390496551249/sg-00-menu.gif[/t][t]http://static.squarespace.com/static/50257676e4b0ac9409ef7f11/t/52e14b46e4b03afb01fe8888/1390496583458/pa-00-menu.gif[/t]
lol how did they only notice now
I think it's about time somebody usurped this king already.
I hope Namco jumps in just fucking wreck King's ass. Oh my god Namco, please please please ruin King for using the word 'Pac'
What fucking moronic patent judge let them trademark the word 'Candy'? You might as well let them trademark the word 'the' while you're at it!
King seems like a "developer" run by very petty people.

Buy a laptop for 1/2 the price of an Iphone and then you can play real games.
Why the fuck do people play Candy Crush in the first place it is retarded. Buy a laptop for 1/2 the price of an Iphone and then you can play real games.
let me just slide my laptop into my back pocket.
lol how did they only notice now
You're reading it wrong, they are explaining how they had a contract with King (most likely flash game monetization) but then MaxGames made a better deal and so they canceled King's offer and left. But then like most "great" places, they take the game then claim it as their own. Hence them being warned to RELEASE IT EARLY. IIRC, this was way back when King was pretty much Newgrounds esqueue clone but with more "WIN REAL MONEY FOR PLAYING!", now they changed to RoyalGames and made themselves as an independent developers.
let me just slide my laptop into my back pocket.
If you are a fat bastard with large jeans it might just be possible.
let me just slide my laptop into my back pocket.
what is a carry case
what is a carry case
Not the point. Convenience is key
Why the fuck do people play Candy Crush in the first place it is retarded. Buy a laptop for 1/2 the price of an Iphone and then you can play real games.
Do tell where I can buy a laptop for 100-150 that can play "real games" because i'd fuckin love to know where I can get a deal like that.
Do tell where I can buy a laptop for 100-150 that can play "real games" because i'd fuckin love to know where I can get a deal like that.
I could tell you but the laptop would probably burn a hole through your lap after thirty minutes of use, and it comes with a Chinese OS preinstalled with spyware that tries to get your passwords and credit information.
what is a carry case
Even better, take a desktop. Get a cart and a tiny generator and outlet and plug in an entire computer and monitor, maybe even two or three monitors if you're feeling lucky. Simply push the cart around and enjoy the world of mobile desktop gaming.
Why the fuck do people play Candy Crush in the first place it is retarded. Buy a laptop for 1/2 the price of an Iphone and then you can play real games.
are you seriously trying to compare phones and computers as gaming platforms
are you seriously trying to compare phones and computers as gaming platforms
Tragically, yes
Honestly I was expecting to see a picture of Candy Crush Saga next to a picture of Bejeweled.
Popcap does nothing. Their Bejweled series was popular back in the Early 2000s. They don't seem to take action on King virtually ripping off them with Candy Crush.
To even be able to trademark something, you have to demonstrate you used it first in a commercial context. Even in games only, there is no way candy crush was first, even if it might be the most popular right now.
I really wish scumbag companies like King and Zynga were run into the ground. them having to pay really inexpensive fees to cover up for the billions of dollars they have and getting shut down for being the dipshits they are would be some sweet, sweet justice.
I hope their abuse of Namco's IP gets their "rights" to Candy and Saga revoked. The Pac-Man series actually does name their games this way (i.e. Pac-Attack, Pac-In-Time, Pac-Pix, Pac-Mania, Pac-Land . . . ) and it's using a corruption that isn't a true English word by itself.
I dislike companies like this. It makes budding developers scared to release anything, making us lose out on potentially amazing games.

Whoever granted that trademark should either lose their job or not be handling english requests. [editline]24th January 2014[/editline] not that candy is much better, really

[editline]24th January 2014[/editline] not that candy is much better, really
Iirc they don't have the rights to "saga", they're just attack people that have names close to theirs. I may be wrong though, don't take my word for it.
It's possible they can make the argument of tradedress and consumer confusion in order to get games with similar names to theirs taken down as it would harm their business.
So King is Zynga 2.0 it seems
I can't wait until my savior king.com - the best sites for all fun games!, takes over the whole game market!
Iirc they don't have the rights to "saga", they're just attack people that have names close to theirs. I may be wrong though, don't take my word for it.
Actually, they do. They have trademarks for saga and candy. The trademark for candy seems to be broader in scope than the one for saga (the trademark for saga covers only video games, whereas the trademark for candy covers recording devices, blank discs, clothing, education services, film production, party planning, etc.)
