Owl City "Because apparently if you make good music, you're gay!" - General

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love Owl City's music. And I used to be a person who HATED Electronic/Electronica/Synthpop music. Their lyrics have no real meaning, you're supposed to come up with that yourself. So, here's my story: Sometime last summer, me and a bunch of friends were hanging out. One of my female friends, who is a real Electronic/Electronica/Synthpop nutcase, would always listen to it openly. I would try to argue with her that it shouldn't even be considered music since there are no real instruments involved, mostly only synthesizers, and the singers voices are usually autotuned. Now, on this particular day, said female friend had gotten a text on her phone from somebody. When her text ringtone went off, I was mesmerized by the music, it had such an upbeat tune and happy melody that I had to ask her what song it was. She promptly said, "Why would you care? It's Electronic." I told her that maybe I had a change of heart and asked her once more what song it was. It was Strawberry Avalanche by Owl City. And so began my love for Owl City's music, and Electronic/Electronica/Synthpop in general. So, now for a little bit about Owl City (Copy pasta from the Wiki): "Owl City is an American synthpop musical project by Adam Young. Young started out making music in his basement in his hometown of Owatonna, Minnesota, later developing a following through his MySpace profile before being signed to Universal Republic. Young's influences are disco and European electronic music. After two independent albums, Owl City gained mainstream popularity from the 2009 major label debut album Ocean Eyes, which spawned the hit single "Fireflies"." "Owl City was started by Adam Young in his parents' basement while he worked at a Coca-Cola warehouse, turning to music as a result of his insomnia. There has been some controversy as to whether or not Adam Young is homosexual. I stand my ground when I say that he is not; some of his songs, notably Vanilla Twilight, are dedicated to his previous girlfriend, who passed away some time ago (I think this is stated on the back of one of their album covers, I don't know for sure). Also, he is currently in a dating relationship with a girl named Ann (who claims that Vanilla Twilight was written about her), so how can he be homosexual? The only thing that could point to this is his somewhat feminine nature; if you've attended any of Owl City's concerts, you'd know what I'm talking about. I don't like his music that much, but I did like Fireflies for a few days, then the annoying lyrics caught up.

Fireflies is amazing.

I like Owl City, but as you said, the lyrics often don't make sense, but hey, it sounds good. And that's what I like.

His lyrics make absoluty no sense but I like the tune of it. If he better lyrics he would be 15x better.

ITT: Op is being stupidly defensive about his precious Owl City In my opinion he's okay but he's not very replayable. Fireflies has been played around 10 times on my Itunes playlist and I can't imagine ever touching it again, I just got sick of it. Same goes for Hello Seattle. It's not that he's bad, but his stuff is very basic and its very hard to connect to the song when the lyrics are such bull. So yeah. He's catchy and talented to a degree but he's not anything overly special. He could be, I guess, but at the moment he's just another mainstream artist that got a rocket-boost from hormonal teenage girls in my eyes.

I have nothing against the lyrics. I listen to a bunch of stuff where I have no idea what the vocalist is saying. Every song sounds the goddamn same though.

He uses autotune, but what you're hearing is a Vocoder. Alot of people don't like him, and i'm starting not to as much ever since he hit it big. I use to listen to him when he was starting out, and he's amazing. Fuzzy Blue Lights is a terrific song, but the reason i admire him so much is that he does all the composing by himself with a micro-keg piano. He makes amazing drum beats even. But i do enjoy his music, it's all so happy and puts me in a great mood. I just HATE fireflies though

It's something I can't listen for very long, but they are very up-beat, have a good energy into them, I like some songs for that reason. There are worse things to listen out there.
