That is according to a director at the country's version of NASA, who also said international sanctions would not prevent them putting more advanced satellites into orbit over the next five years.Hyon Kwang Il, a scientist at North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration, told AP: "Even though the US and its allies try to block our space development, our aerospace scientists will conquer space and definitely plant the flag of the DPRK on the moon."
He added that North Korean intends "to do manned spaceflight and scientific experiments in space, make a flight to the moon and moon exploration and also exploration to other planets".
Leader Kim Jong Un has ordered scientists to launch more Earth observation satellites and, in what would be a significant advance, the country's first geostationary communications satellite, Mr Hyon said.
"All of this work will be the basis for the flight to the moon," Mr Hyon said, adding that he personally would like to see that happen "within 10 years' time".
The comments were published a day after North Korea launched a missile that landed in Japanese waters for the first time in nearly 20 years.
This prompted the US to warn it was ready to defend "ourselves and our allies".
I'm glad they decided to make a sequel to Iron Sky themselves
hey, if they actually manage to do it maybe it'll jumpstart our space program again
Space Race V2???
Space doesn't need more trash
Seriously maybe it's time to start actually funding NASA again, instead of letting them catch whatever falls off the table
North Korea saying something about flight, and it's not to do with missiles?
Did aliens replace them overnight?

A rocket that can hit the moon can hit the sea just fine so they can continue their war on Cthulhu.
They're going to kill so many astronauts.
hey, if they actually manage to do it maybe it'll jumpstart our space program again
I'd expect almost every other country to do it before them.
They're going to kill so many "traitors".
ftfy
Even if they manage to plant a flag on the moon, unfiltered UV rays from the sun will bleach the material in a matter of time and it will just be another white flag. "We give up!"
There's a problem in Kim's logic cause there is no water on the moon for them to crash into.
Nah man, they can't just jump the tech tree like that, they have to figure out agriculture first.
You know, for feeding their diminishing population of potential astronauts.

Oddly enough the North Korean population is actually steadily growing. Despite food shortages, they generally aren't starving anymore and tend to have enough food to raise (albeit somewhat malnourished) children.
More apt title: North Korea makes up a shitty excuse for testing ICBMs.

Space flight has always been 95% about developing ICBM technology and 5% about space flight. It's why NASA isn't getting funded properly, the US' ICBMs are just fine as they are.
so let me get this straight: they want to land on the moon within the next 10 years but they can't even land a fucking missile on solid land that's not their own?

Pretty sure they can, they're just not looking to practically off self just yet.
But can't Kim Jong Un fly and breathe in space? Why doesn't He just go to the moon Kimself and plant the flag?

this was not true after the mid 60s. liquid rocket technology continued to advance for use in space rockets on a totally different path from ICBMs. after minuteman entered service the US had little reason to keep advancing liquid rocket engines for ICBMs, they are impractical as deterrent.
The nation that can't even feed its own people wants to send a rocket to the moon.
can we please just free the north koreans, they're suffering because of this shithead kim
Fuck it, if they wanna try, let them.
It'd be actually an amazing argument for space colonization if the Norks could land on the moon.

Might not be for ICBMs, but everything after was designed with space warfare in mind. Including the Space Shuttle. Soviets claimed the space shuttle launch pad at Vandenberg AFB, and the "Orbit Once Around" abort mode was a guise for a nuclear bombing run on Russia. They designed the Buran shuttle with that in mind. Seeing it as a military tool.
I don't think the astronauts will ever return, not because they'll fail (maybe that too) but bcause they don't want to return to NK :v:

they'll starve just as much on the moon as they would in NK
but they'll suffer less
Seems their war on Poseidon is taking a wrong turn.
Well I'd feed my people first but oh well kim you do you
Getting to the moon is easy. Just remove the nuclear warhead from an ICBM and strap a chair on top in it's place. It worked for Wan Hu, and he didn't even have ICBMs
At the rate international relations are headed, they'll do it. By 2026 the US flags will all be white
I see he wants to do battle against the lunar seas now.
