I realize we have had quite a few threads on Blade Runner before, but I got around to watching the final cut the other day (previously having only seen the theatrical and the fist director's cut) and felt it was a good time to start another discussion. Let me start by saying, what a fantastic film. Visually stunning and thought provoking. Rutger Hauer's performance is mesmerizing to say the least, and it's interesting because this film shows just how great an actor he can be, yet he fell off the radar and starred mostly in B-grade action films for the rest of his career. The entire film is a masterpiece, and I think, Scott's best film with the exception of maybe Alien. And it amazes me that despite the boom in CGI, that a film from the 1980s can achieve more visually with camera tricks and organic special effects than any amount of money dumped on some hack's action blockbuster can. POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE Now as far as the final cut goes, I'm not sure if I like it better than Scott's first director's cut. In some ways, it is superior, but certain little things I missed. For example, in the director's cut, it was almost ambiguous and left up to the viewer to decide if Deckard was a replicant or not, certain scenes had cues that suggested he might be, but never actually outright said it. In the final cut, they removed some of those subtleties. The one particular bit that annoyed me was the closing scene where Deckard finds the Origami Unicorn, Gaff's voice plays over in Deckard's head, which I felt should've been left out as it removes some of the ambiguity. Overall however, it is the best version of the film I feel and infinitely better than the terrible disaster that is the Theatrical version.
I have the final cut on blu ray, it looks amazing. Was the threatre cut the one with Deckard narrating? I heard it was really shit
I have the final cut on blu ray, it looks amazing. Was the threatre cut the one with Deckard narrating? I heard it was really shit
Yeah. Supposedly Harrison didn't want to do the narration and he was forced to do the narration at gunpoint and near the end you can actually hear his pain because they shoved a fork in his balls to make him do the narration.
Yeah that was the theatrical release, and it wasn't as good as Ridley's later cuts.
I have the final cut on blu ray, it looks amazing. Was the threatre cut the one with Deckard narrating? I heard it was really shit
that's because the studio forced them to add narration when they didn't want to i heard harrison ford tried to make the narration really shitty on purpose so it wouldn't be included, but they put it in anyways
Harrison actually denies that, but honestly he sounds bored as hell in that narration.
i actually didn't know about the narration thing when i started watching the theatrical cut on netflix. i fell asleep like 45 minutes in but i remember hating the narration
Yeah the narration was terrible, and shows you just how EASILY a fucking great project can be ruined by some dumb asses with legal contracts and cash lining their pockets. The theatrical version was basically "Fuck you ridley": the movie.
I have the final cut on blu ray, it looks amazing.
Yes, that it is.
Harrison hated the narrating. He didn't want to do it. In the "Dangerous Days" documentary he talks about how he didn't want to do the narration but had to, so yes he did kind of intentionally make it shit.
This is my favourite science-fiction film, I love it a lot.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. This and 12 Monkeys are definitely at the top of my sci-fi list.
I've yet to see Final Cut. All I have now is Director's Cut. I must say, however, that I prefer "I want more life, fucker," to, "I want more life, father." [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] But yeah this movie is amazing and definitely one of my favorites of all time.
First time I saw the film I saw the director's cut. Much better than the theatrical release. still, I have yet to see the final cut. I'll probably convince my dad to watch it with me some day.

I'm pretty lucky to have an original theatrical poster of this film, I never thought much of it until I seen the film. Now i cherish the thing.
Awesome Ending. :pcgaming:
that ending is awful ambiguous ending is far superior
I watched the Director's Cut of this film a couple of months ago. Rutger Hauer was amazing in this film, and it was nice seeing some old 80s science fiction films again.
I love this film.
i don't think i ever got the whole [sp]decker is a replicant[/sp] thing. seriously i watched it a second time after hearing about it basically on a quest to find proof in the film, on a high dose of amphetamines (which make me super analytical of everything, especially films) and never caught anything that made it seem that way

This is a film I really want to see. But it'll no doubt just me me sad that Harrison isn't still young and playing awesome roles in newer and popular films. Imagine a Young Harrison in Inception. Or being Jack Sparrow in POTC. Or Harvey Dent in Batman. I miss the day of the awesome film stars.

If they ever do a Blade Runner remake, they will probably cast Shia LePoof as Deckard.
I didn't like this movie, the book was better by a long shot.

This is one of my favourite films, but I've NEVER seen the Theatrical Cut. I should watch it some time.
This is one of my favourite films, but I've NEVER seen the Theatrical Cut. I should watch it some time.
It wasn't as good. Trust me.
The theatrical cut is terrible. Especially in the pivotal moments of the film, you're being sucked into this beautiful world of intense subtext and emotion and then BAM in comes this dull thudding voice over telling you to what you already know. "HEY GUYS JUST MAKING SURE YOU GOT WHAT IS GOING ON HERE, BECAUSE WE HERE AT WARNER BROS FEEL AUDIENCES ARE MUCH LIKE OURSELVES, AND LACK THE INTELLIGENCE TO INTERPRET WHAT IS HAPPENING ON SCREEN". And the ending they tacked on in the theatrical cut makes me want to puke in my mouth, it doesn't fit in at all. If Deckard were a replicant he would've been able to hop right back onto the roof during that last fight scene. Just sayin'. Also, I didn't understand the unicorn dream, or the origami shit, what was all that about?
