HD version: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=df5_1409919095 After dropping the banner, it began moving backwards slowly.. the pilot has then moved the cyclic forward, and put the helicopter into a vortex ring state, but didn't recover it and hit the runway at speed. Action starts from 0:45.
I hope the pilot(s) and any passengers made it out alright.
One pilot died at once, the second one died later in the hospital
That's a bummer...
One pilot died at once, the second one died later in the hospital
2 pilots died; one has 90% burns (which means he's probably going to die).
For those who don't know what a vortex ring state is, from wikipedia:
The vortex ring state, also known as settling with power, is a dangerous condition that may arise in helicopter flight, when a vortex ring system engulfs the rotor causing severe loss of lift. Essentially, the helicopter descends into its own downwash. When the condition arises, increasing the rotor power merely feeds the vortex motion without generating additional lift.
One way to get out of a vortex ring state is to try to move laterally to move out of your own downwash.
How do you avoid VRS again? Once you've entered a VRS, you have about a second to recover. It generally only occurs when you're in ground effect.
action starts from 0:45? The video is only 0:40 long
Damn, especially when people start clapping thinking it's all part of a plan. It's always scary as fuck to get into a vortex ring, and I guess the pilot wanted to try to land instead of moving out of the way. I don't know much about mi-8 to know if it can recover from that height, though. It seems to me that the fatal mistake was that the pilot didn't immediately kill the collective as soon as he touched the ground. If he did, the tail would still break from the impact and he would do a little spin on his tires, but at least the chopper wouldn't fly up and crash again, probably.
I've heard people saying Mi-8s are unreliable, is it true as well?
action starts from 0:45? The video is only 0:40 long
I originally only had the LL version.. I added the YT clip.
