[release]FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) — Drivers near the South Carolina-North Carolina state line have been warned to be on the lookout for zombies, hunters and tanks.
The Herald of Rock Hill reports that one of the electronic signs, which normally flash messages about construction or crashes, read "Zombies Ahead" on Sunday. Another flashed "Watch for Hunters," while a third said "Be alert for Tanks."
The signs are on Highway 160 near Fort Mill, S.C.
Ken Wilson with the state's transportation department says a key is needed to get into the control box for the signs. A code is needed to change the wording.
So far, there have been no reports of the undead or tanks.
Hackers pulled similar pranks in 2009, using road signs to warn of zombies in Collinsville, Ill., and Austin, Texas.[/release]
oh god, i love how the news are oblivious to videogames

Hasn't this been done before?

Yeah two years ago..
Too bad the source doesn't get the reference. I chuckled but it's too bad it was done before.

Fake.
Wow. Something neat actually happened where I live.
My friend saw one of these signs earlier today in San Francisco too:

So there has been reports of hunters is what your saying?

No, the zombies are actually there!
Why can't it happen in Charleston?
"so far, there have been no reports of the undead or tanks"
AHAHAHAHAHAH, this made me laugh uncontrollably. How can a news agency not put enough research to get the joke?
yeah heard about this last week on NPR, dad lol'd so hard.
I need to figure out how to do this.
Prepare for:
The Ceph
Are
Coming

Pretty sure that this article's playing along with the prank...
Tanks and Hunters are pretty broad terms, it's understandable that a news agency wouldn't get the reference.
The access panel on the sign is generally protected by a small lock, but often are left unprotected. Upon opening the access panel you can see the display electronics.
The black control pad is attached by a curly cord, with a keyboard on the face.
Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection to "Instant Text". Type whatever you want to display, Hit Enter to submit. You can now either throw it up on the sign by selecting "Run w/out save" or you can add more pages to it by selecting "Add page"
** HACKER TIPS ** Should it will ask you for a password. Try "DOTS", the default password.
In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed it. However if they did, never fear. Hold "Control" and "Shift" and while holding, enter "DIPY". This will reset the sign and reset the password to "DOTS" in the process. You're in!
There are far greater threats out there...

Definitely would be more scared of a pack of raptors than the undead
They could at least get creative with these instead of recycling the same joke two years later.
If you REALLY wanted to fuck with people, warn them about the radiation ahead that's blown over from Japan.
