• 1998 Toyota Avalon for 5000$ - Good deal?

My neighbor is offering to sell me his grandfather's 1998 Toyota Avalon XL for $5000. Leather interior, V6 engine, ABS, airbags, purple paint. The car has 70,000 miles on it, with a new steering rack and timing belt. It drives pretty nicely, though it handles like a Buick. Tires need to be replaced, as the tread is very shallow. If I get the Toyota, it'll be replacing my 1999 Ford Contour SE 2.0L with 90,000 miles on it (new timing belt, alternator, new-ish tires), though it is beginning to show its age; would probably sell for $1800-3000. Good deal or no?
Why don't people ever post pics in threads like these?
No. Unless it is mint with little to no mileage. And even completely cherry, the book value is around $4500.
Also be sure to consider the fact that you're about to buy Toyota's version of a mid-90's Buick. You can do MUCH better for 5k.

After having a rock hard Ford suspension in college parking lots for a while, the charm of it kinda wears off. [editline]4th July 2012[/editline] It also has a full service history.
that car just screams boring. 5 grand can get you a lot more than you think
I know it's a boring car, but I'm really looking for something reliable, safe, and comfortable; my current car is none of those. When I transfer over to a 4-year college, I'm going to be doing 50 miles every day in effectively stop-and-go traffic, which I know my current car won't last long doing. I'm probably going to go through with the deal after reading reviews and reliability reports.
reliable, safe, and comfortable
Volvo.
Kelly blue book is a terrible place to go for car values. Anyone with a sense of how the world actually works will go to NADA instead, as they base more on the actual market value and not assumed values like KBB does (Which is stupid, imo).

For a trade-in, yeah. My brother once traded in a 25th anniversary Mustang Notch for $100. I was so mad, I told him I would have gave him twice that at least for it. It ran, but poorly, but fuck, a tagged Fox shell is worth at least 300-400. :(
I wish my Odometer worked so I knew how many miles my truck has. :(
If you want a car that is big, reliable, and comfy, get a Crown Vic. They're fucking everywhere and last forever. Also, they are correct wheel drive, so you can reep a skeed if you really need to.

You can get something much better for $5000.
RX8's go for that price around here as well as other sports cars. I guess you could go for an Avalon grandma machine
no
The Avalon is reliable and comfortable. That's it. I'd get something with a manual transmission at minimum.
Anything made with a toyota badge with 4 doors from the 90's = $2500 obo at least in Northern Cali for the most part.
Bought it for $4900. Been cleaning it up, and cleaning up my old Ford to sell it. Anyone want to buy a 99 Ford Contour SE for $3000? :v:
RX8's go for that price around here as well as other sports cars. itt: bad deals, bad deals everywhere
everyone said no but you did it anyway? oh well we tried. i dont wanna make you feel like you made a huge mistake butttttttttt
I got a newer supercharged coupe for $1200; with fewer miles. Take your money elsewhere, your neighbor is insane. [editline]unfathomablestupidity[/editline] Wait nevermind you're insane too.
wait this is good news for me im selling my car i should up the price...someone will pay it
wait this is good news for me im selling my car i should up the price...someone will pay it
What car, and how much did you want to sell it for?

[editline]unfathomablestupidity[/editline] Wait nevermind you're insane too.
It may be overpriced for where you live, but around here, it's a bargain. A Japanese car in half as good shape as this is usually $7000. Plus, with this, I have the entire maintenance history, as the original driver kept meticulous records on every oil change, repair, and tire change.

Around here, you paid at least $6000 too much. Sell it for $8,000.
there was like no absolute reason to get rid of your car. what a waste [editline]10th July 2012[/editline] take it from me I paid $4000 for a honda with just under 100k miles, you got fucked so hard
Not a bad FL car man (I'm in bradenton). Just tint those fucking windows on the avalon. you should have went 4500 though in order to pay for new tires. remember that a car is only worth as much as somebody is willing to pay
