EU could extend copyright levies to cloud services
Controversial rules to maintain copyright levies on mobile devices, and potentially extend them to cloud services, were passed by the European Parliament Thursday.
Parliament voted 252 to 122, with 19 abstentions, to approve the new law, put forward by French Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Françoise Castex.
The current E.U. Copyright Directive allows for taxes placed on products that allow copying of copyright content such as printers or smartphones, that are then passed on to copyright holders. However, the new proposals envisage an updated list of leviable devices and services, potentially including cloud services. In a worst-case scenario, consumers could end up paying twice for transferring legally purchased content between their own accounts, say digital rights activists.
Against all logic, MEPs have voted for consumers to keep paying the hidden copyright tax when purchasing a smartphone, MP3 player, tablet, USB stick and other electronic devices, even if they never make private copies. Even worse, they have inexplicably supported provisions which call for an extension of copyright levies to cloud services such as legal streaming platforms. MEPs have taken a step backward and have signaled support for a system which harms EU consumers, said the organization.

TL;DR: Paying extra for storage media, not because you used them to share copyrighted material, but because you might. GG logic.
So how about that "innocent until proven guilty" huh? So nice to see them forgetting the fucking basics of the fair society they're supposed to represent. Bunch of cunts.
Ah, the war on piracy. Always punishing the ones who don't do it.
Piracy can't be stopped right? But seriously this isn't gonna do shit to combat piracy, other than cause MORE problems.

The current law is pretty stupid anyway.
edit: hell I'd pirate because of that. Why not, you have already paid for it when you bought that smartphone, printer, camera and microphone last week.
"People are pirating our copyrighted stuff! Lets go fuck with the people who actually aren't doing anything wrong because we think they might do something wrong in the future by causing them more problems for doing the right thing . That will show those pirates! YAY FOR CAPITALISM!"

Piracy can't ever be stopped. As long as there's a way for people to share files between them, they will share files that you normally have to pay for. There's two things these retards need to learn. The first is what I just said, people will share and there's nothing you can do to stop it short of preventing them from sharing anything at all. The other is that their shit needs to be worth the money. I'd go so far as to say that most people don't mind paying for it even if they can download it for free - as long as it's actually worth the money and I have that option (looking at you, delayed movie/tv show releases). You're competing with 'free', and the way to do that isn't to try and outright ban that option but to make your product good enough and your service easy enough that people want to use it.
I think in Sweden we pay extra for offline storage because of some thing that passed some time ago.
The European Union, the other other USSR.

Yeah, increase in product prices due to "piracy" totally compares to Gulags and other serious violations of human rights.
NOTE: This is not for them to get money from piracy. This is because they demand payment when you make private copies of legally owned files. Like ripping a CD or copying a purchased CD to have one in your own car.
I would like to add that I do not think it's okay. In fact, this is even worse.

So why aren´t we putting people in prison for buying guns? I mean, they might use them to kill someone. How about steak knives? You might cut someones throat with it. Any martial arts student? Why not put people into prison because they have hands, which can be used to kill people.

Well, Hitler was fond of art and war.
Luckily I don't use cloud services. But I friggin hate ideas like these. It's pretty much like the german GEZ which is pretty stupid and tried to get some money from discount market chains since the cash registers had internet connection and you MIGHT be able to get access towards radio/television/whatever.

Hopefully the commission review will make sure that any stupid levies are scrapped.
typical French mentality regarding technology, this stuff doesn't even have to stop at cloud, everything digital can make fucking copies, might as well extend this to be an electronics device tax
They did something similar in Spain some years ago, the government added a tax on CDs, pen-drives and such because they could be used for piracy. Instead of lessening the impact it grew because since they were paying the tax the people stopped feeling guilty about it.
Fuck, I sure am going to miss having nice butt services.
Even if everything was free, there'd still be piracy.
Shit, go onto the piratebay and look up free games/android apps. It's how I got most of the shit for my kindle before I rooted it.
I'd support copyright levies if they resulted in laws that said you can't sue people who pirate things for non-commercial use
I'd support copyright levies if they resulted in laws that said you can't sue people who pirate things for non-commercial use
It's not quite there yet, but the text of the law now states consumers should not be hindered in making copies of stuff they buy from one form of media to another, and that any DRM should not hinder that process. I've read the previous iteration of this law (albeit a while ago), and it's an improvement in that area at least.
Another reason to put on my list of "Why I self-host everything"

We have a law for that in the netherlands that allows us to do that. It adds a small tax to cd's etc but we're taking about 3 ct tax for a cd and 5 eur for a pc/laptop/tablet.

yes the USSR is of course infamous around the world for its extreme restrictions placed on cloud-based internet services. very astute observation

as we all know Stalin died of a stroke when his iPhone was unable to text his servants and ask them for help due to copyright law
[editline]1st March[/editline]
his servants did not enter his room until several days after his death, fearing that he would fly into a sudden rage and smash their second-hand Nexus S android phones - the best they could afford in such a dystopian land
