He released a whole album, why just post one song?
Because there's only two videos from his new album on his channel?
He released a whole album, why just post one song?
because it's a newly released music video for one of the songs from the album?

When you hear that Anthony Fantano gave DAMN a 7:
When you hear that Anthony Fantano gave DAMN a 7:
Seriously I was waiting for that review and it just made me sad. DAMN is fucking awesome.
Fantano manages to disappoint me more and more with every review, it's remarkable. Atrocity Exhibition receiving a 9 was the only one that I was pretty happy with recently.
I dunno, his review of the new Sun Kil Moon album was pretty spot on. It all depends for me and at the end of the day it is just his opinion and he isn't a shit head about it more often than not.
I can kinda agree with a 7. While I do enjoy the album, I don't enjoy it nearly as much as GKMC or TPAB, and I fully agree with him on his note about the inconsistency of the album. The last four tracks though are great, and I love that whole stretch.
Seriously I was waiting for that review and it just made me sad. DAMN is fucking awesome.
I kind of agreed with a lot of his points (I really liked LOVE. tho), but I would have rated Damn an 8/10, on par with Section 80.
I personally enjoyed Section.80 more as a whole than this album. Although I wasn't expecting another TPAB or GKMC, this project was just so sonically inconsistent across the board, and Kendrick left a lot of themes and ideas unfinished.
I feel kinda bad for my boy kung-fu Kenny. To Pimp a Butterfly was arguably a masterpiece of an album, and it's really hard to bring yourself to surpass that standard. It's why Nas really wasn't able to break through the ceiling he put after Illmatic. However, I still love this album. It's just not nearly as perfect as TPAB or GKMC.

Damn is amazing for individual track listening, but TPAB was incredible as a collective whole, and was a perfection of the storytelling he did with GKMC.
I think Fantano was wrong giving Damn. a 7, it's not a straight 10 but it's at least a light 9 strong 8 I love just about every song in this album, Feel has had a big effect on me but the rest like Pride, XXX, Fear, Loyalty and yah are just amazing songs
whats with the payot curls I feel like humble is my favourite song in Damn but then again that might be because it's the one I've heard the most
whats with the payot curls I feel like humble is my favourite song in Damn but then again that might be because it's the one I've heard the most
If you like humble, DNA will grow on you real fast.
DAMN is a fantastic album, it's just that the lows on DAMN are lower than the lows on his past albums. Love and Loyalty are fine songs but they honestly fuck with the feel of the album too much. Element has the most addicting hook of 2017 so far.
Mike Will Made It is my hero, first song I heard of him We Can't Stop still bangs today.

That was obviously his intention with the placement of those two though, so I can't knock it. There were basically no lows on TPAB in my opinion as well, with the only low being its lack of individual replayability. As for GKMC, I really, really love The Art of Peer Pressure, Good Kid, Swimming Pools, etc, but I cannot stand Poetic Justice, M.A.A.D. City(I know, heresy!), and Real at all. For me there are far worse lows on that.

That's not to say its bad because its not another story or central idea driven album, but the themes he attempts to present on Damn all feel unfinished or thinly veiled, which completely breaks the flow of the album for me since he jumps to a new topic without ever resolving the previous one. Note that there are times where he recognises these unresolved feelings, like on YAH or FEAR; but some just feel unintentional, like on HUMBLE or GOD, where he is telling other people to be humble and then asking god not to judge his lifestyle, which contradicts his previous displays of trying to live his life through God without any real explanation. Again, at least on GKMC, Section.80, and TPAB, regardless of how you felt on each track, it was easily recognisable that they all played into a greater theme or message that ended gracefully and with full-depth.

I also love the album title and pic endlessly, it so perfectly describes how he must have felt making the album. If his intention with this album was less to tell a story, and more to display a sort of schizophrenic break down of the human psyche, I think he did that very well. The vibe I got from the album was that of someone going through some serious struggles, and aching to solve these issues by breaking down the sources of these issues, and getting through them one by one doing what he was made to do, make music. Look at the album as a sort of checklist, one in which he manually helps himself fix and eliminate the sources of his frustration.
I just finished listening to the album, and as someone who only cares about bangers, this one was kinda disappointing.
It doesn't touch TPAB for me, that's for sure. That shit is on another level imo. I still don't know where I'd put it along with GKMC and Sec80 yet. I do think he made some of his best tracks on DAMN though, like DNA, XXX, and FEAR.
This track is so gritty. The Fox News clip and other misinterpretations of Alright really dug into him.
I love the videos for his music as much as I love his music
