The government should consider banning Muslim girls from wearing veils in public places such as schools, a Lib Dem Home Office minister has said. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24104811
The government should consider banning this minister from participating in politics
Can somebody sneak a fedora ban into something like that?
The only time they should be banned is when in court or times of emergency.
"These women are so opressed, so we must take away their right to wear what they want to in order to fight their opression."
Can somebody sneak a fedora ban into something like that?
I don't recall seeing many muslim women wearing fedoras.
They tried this in Switzerland a while back. It got shot down before it had a chance.
This is coming from a Lib Dem, remember. Conservatives with another name now.

What ever happened to the freedom of wearing hats, bandana and any head gear? The only time they should not allow headgear is when taking a photo ID. Then again, a photo ID should focus only on the face so head gear should not covering face.
I can understand the religous rights for it but in some cases I can understand. If I was to go into a shop with my bike helmet on I would get asked to take it off, why ? safety of everyone involved. If I refused to take it off, I would asked to leave. fair enough. If I went to an airport and wore a helmet after going through the above, how could they recognise my passport I.D. with my helmet on. Would I take offense? no. Even if it was my religion. Why, cause I feel its the right thing to do.
Im not too sure what the security risks are of allowing Muslim women to wear veils since I haven't heard of any major terrorist or criminal act that succeeded due to the unidentifiable of the women. OK one attack in Afghanistan or Iraq where women with veils were used to hide bombs.
How is this even news? It's never in a million years going to pass and it certainly does nothing except tarnish said ministers image.
for some reason I just picture like one of those super covering veils with the really tiny eye slot, but then I remember they're just talking about headscarfs in general. ya I can see in court and for ID photos but if its not obscuring their face and or making it difficult to teach them (like a full covering would) then I see no reason to ban them [editline]16th September 2013[/editline] if they did want to wear a full covering though, I think it would be OK to ask them to remove it as its impairing the instructors ability to understand the student and see if she is understanding the material [editline]16th September 2013[/editline] just common sense though, one doesn't wear a parka in class, even if this is a religious decision
Anyone remember earlier this year when Selfridges in London was robbed by men wearing burkas? If I remember right they all came through the front door with axes and sledgehammers under the burkas and then robbed around £1.5m worth of items. Though they should be allowed, I'd assume if a security guard is suspicious then not much could be done to question/confront them without him being branded as racist/islamaphobic.
this is dumb but weren't Muslims forced into wearing veils due to mass sexism?
Are they talking about the headscarf or the burqa/niqab? If it's the first then they are fucking retarded.
this is dumb but weren't Muslims forced into wearing veils due to mass sexism?
If they want to be more independent religiously and stop wearing these, then that's something they have to do themselves - it would definitely be nice if the sexism inherent in the concept could be dealt with, but that's something we should educate them about and let them decide, not force it on them.
this is dumb but weren't Muslims forced into wearing veils due to mass sexism?
no, men and women must dress conservatively, they've just ignored the men part in modern times
im for it.

I know the BBC wrote it, but that title seems a little disingenuous when the minister in question isn't calling for a ban:
"I am instinctively uneasy about restricting the freedom of individuals to observe the religion of their choice. But there is genuine debate about whether girls should feel a compulsion to wear a veil when society deems children to be unable to express personal choices about other areas like buying alcohol, smoking or getting married."
And Nick Clegg isn't advocating it either:
Mr Clegg told the BBC he did not believe in issuing "edicts from Whitehall" and telling people what pieces of clothing they should wear". He said he believed the wearing of full veils was "not appropriate" in the classroom, but would not support a "state ban" on doing so.
