Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said the bid "doesn't advance peace - it pushes it backwards". The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining. 'Birth certificate' "Sixty-five years ago on this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 181, which partitioned the land of historic Palestine into two states and became the birth certificate for Israel," Mr Abbas told the assembly. "The General Assembly is called upon today to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine," he said. Mr Prosor said "the only way to reach peace is through agreements" between the parties, not at the UN. "No decision by the UN can break the 4,000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel," he said. Opponents of the bid say a Palestinian state should emerge only out of bilateral negotiations, as set out in the 1993 Oslo peace accords under which the Palestinian Authority was established. Symbolic milestone The Palestinians are seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967. France, Spain and Norway are among those urging the General Assembly to raise the Palestinians' UN status. Germany was set to abstain. While the move is seen as a symbolic milestone in Palestinian ambitions for statehood, the "Yes" vote will also have a practical diplomatic effect, says the BBC's Barbara Plett, at the UN. It would allow the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and bodies like the International Criminal Court. Last year, Mr Abbas asked the UN Security Council to admit the Palestinians as a member state, but that was opposed by the US.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/middle-east-live/2012/nov/29/egypt-crisis-morsi-constitution-live#block-50b7db15b579ff4706419a15
Palestine statehood passes 138-9, with 41 abstaining UN resolution A/67/L28 granting Palestine non-member observer state status passes, 138-9 with 41 abstaining. Huge applase breaks out in the hall. Abbas is receiving hugs. A Palestinian flag is being unfolded on the floor. CSPAN turns the camera on US Ambassador Susan Rice. She looks like she wishes she were in Benghazi.
Bloody good show.
"She looks like she wishes she were in Benghazi." Uh, I know the Guardian is a good newspaper and all but how on earth can you determine that from someone's face.

I hope that the region can have peace in our time.
Goddamn, the month of November in the year 2012. So many elections with amazing outcomes.
FUCK YES.
Ironic since the US voted against it.
Oh boy...
Ironic since the US voted against it.
Which is why I choose that one.
Ironic since the US voted against it.
Well, US is kinda forced to support Israel given the circumstances. I for one welcome country 193 Edit: 194

So where's Palestine gonna be? Like, on a map.
So where's Palestine gonna be? Like, on a map.
Are you joking or something? Do you think they'll just drop Palestine in the middle of Brazil or Sweden or something?
So where's Palestine gonna be? Like, on a map.

So, how are the Palestinians going to get to one part of Palestine to the other?
By passing freely through Israel of course!
Like I said in the other thread, I hope Palestine's at least going to do something about the refugees from Palestine, rather than write most of them off. Last year the UN ambassador stated that 45% of them would not be eligible for citizenship in the new state.
So, how are the Palestinians going to get to one part of Palestine to the other?
they will have to be sneaky
Is there a list of which countries voted for what somewhere? Can't seem to find one. Edit: Spoke too soon, found a picture with the information.
image
That's the predicted votes, I happen to know that Sweden changed their mind in the last minute and voted yes, for instance.
Not predicted, thats the results of the UNESCO vote. UNESCO is a cultural fund.
Just waiting for someone to veto this or pull some nonsense out of their ass. This is too good to happen.
