ANN ARBOR—Researchers at the University of Michigan's Life Sciences Institute have found that amlexanox, an off-patent drug currently prescribed for the treatment of asthma and other uses, also reverses obesity, diabetes and fatty liver in mice.
http://www.ns.umich.edu/new/releases/21179-old-drug-may-point-the-way-to-new-treatments-for-diabetes-and-obesity
Yay, I'm asthmatic and now I'm proud :D
Fuck Where's my old inhaler shit pissing fuck where is it [editline]11th February 2013[/editline] I wish humans were as easy to cure as Mice.
in mice
Well, it's a start I guess.
We just need a pill that turns us all into mice and we're set
misleading title :( besides curing "obesity", as if it's a disease, the fact that it cures diabetes is a good start :D
We just need a pill that turns us all into mice and we're set
check your mouse privilege
If the mice were modified to have human immune systems, this is great news. Otherwise, mice just got more resilient.

I can see this as a downside though, it'd just give people an excuse to be fat, take a pill and it takes out some fat. Leaving you still as shit that sludges through.
Well, it's a start I guess.
Physiologically and genetically we aren't that different to mice.
I can see this as a downside though, it'd just give people an excuse to be fat, take a pill and it takes out some fat. Leaving you still as shit that sludges through.
Jesus Christ, what is it with facepunch and statements like this? Anyone with a lick of common sense knows all peoples bodies are different. Some people can eat like fucking pigs and not gain weight. Some people can eat healthy meals and still have a weight issue. Some people can diet and workout for ages and still have issues with losing weight. So what is wrong with giving people who are actually trying to live healthy another tool to use? A skinny person can eat garbage and still be skinny and have a heart attack just as fast as the obese person. Give people an excuse to be fat? Really, common.. By that logic treadmills are an excuse to be fat seeing as someone can eat a bunch of shit and then run it off (If that were only possible).
Wait...what? That's pretty damn cool if they can get it to work on humans.
It even states in the article that some people's bodies will try to "defend" their current weight by manipulating metabolic rates. This medicine prevents that from happening.
Physiologically and genetically we aren't that different to mice.
I'm just worried the FDA will keep this for decades like they do with most drugs.
I'm just worried the FDA will keep this for decades like they do with most drugs.
Just... Don't. Don't go there.
What's the point of animal testing again? Last thing I checked, humans and mice are different species.
But yeah, this would be pretty awesome to have
What's the point of animal testing again? Last thing I checked, humans and mice are different species.
Usually to make sure we don't kill humans
We just need a pill that turns us all into mice and we're set
Careful. The fetishists might be into that.
The metabolic processes are there for a reason, tampering with them seems like a bad idea. This is why these sorts of things need to be heavily researched before going on the market, they could have long term repercussions that are subtle at first sight.
People, mice are almost-always used to test medical drugs before they get clinical trials. The fact that the drug did this is simply amazing

Those skinny people who eat like pigs and don't gain weight are probably offsetting it by being very aerobically active, and just eating healthy alone doesn't automatically cause you to lose weight. You have to eat less than your body uses via calculating your total daily energy expenditure. There's no magical genetic variation in metabolic rate; especially for two individuals of equivalent age, height, and build. That would fucking defy the laws of thermodynamics. In fact, fat people actually have faster metabolisms due to carrying around more tissue and generally putting more strain on their body.
