She had to drink her coffee in the lobby. Diana Nyman, the chairman of the Roma Council in Gothenborg, was set to speak at the release of the white paper on discrimination of Roma and travellers in Sweden. The government put her up at the four-star Sheraton Hotel, a stone's throw away from parliament and government quarters, but when Nyman, 45, went down for breakfast she was offered a modern-day example of the discrimination that the white-paper on Tuesday admitted had been endemic in Sweden. Nyman, who wears a traditional wide black skirt and frilly blouse and who recently fielded questions about beggars in an online chat, said she was almost knocked over by a staff member who rushed to bar the Roma expert and speaker from entering the breakfast room. "Even after I had showed that I'd paid for breakfast the staff insisted that I stay in the lobby," Nyman told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper (DN) on Tuesday. "They got me coffee so I could drink it there instead." A spokesperson for Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag said the incident would lead his office to "revise" its policy of offering invited guests to stay overnight at the Sheraton. The Local's attempts to reach a Sheraton hotel spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
http://www.thelocal.se/20140325/sweden-admits-treating-roma-as-second-class-citizens
The Swedish government on Tuesday will publish its white paper on the historic treatment of Roma, detailing systemic abuse and police opinion that it would be best to kill them off. "This is an unknown and dark part of Swedish history, maybe even darker than what I thought when we started the work with the white book," Swedish Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag wrote in the op-ed pages of the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper. The white book is based on interviews with Roma and other traveling groups, plus archive material and independent research. "When the country's police at the beginning of the 1900s described Roma and travellers the answers were clear," Ullenhag wrote. "'Ugly', 'unreliable', 'and 'good-for-nothings' were common views." That perception, Ullenhag wrote, laid the foundation for an attitude that the Roma contributed nothing and should be "annihilated". As the report was readied for release, Ullenhag told the TT news agency that the white book would have recognized the many stories of abuse shared by Roma and travellers. "We have a heritage of prejudice, and the racist and xenophobic currents in Swedish society, in particular the first half of the 1900s, still exist today," he added. "But today they are not (expressed by) the authorities but by racist websites," the minister said, before concluding that Roma and travellers were among the most vulnerable groups in Sweden today. Ullenhag said he had met many people who chose not to wear traditional dress. "(They) are still not open with their identity as Roma or traveller because many are scared of the reactions," he said.
welp.
"But the Roma are evil!"
If they denied me breakfast I had paid for (or had paid by somebody else) I am calling the fucking cops.
If they denied me breakfast I paid for (or had paid by somebody else) I am calling the fucking cops.
to make things more amusing(horrifying), the hotel tried to pin this on her, saying they were sad and outraged at the accusation. http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article18612632.ab
Sheraton's "apology" to Diana Yesterday Sheraton refused to serve Roma Diana Nyman breakfast. Today she gets a call from the hotel's acting CEO, Thomas Johansson, where he says that his staff is sad and outraged. - I replied that it's unbelievable that he calls and says it to me right now, after what happened, said Diana Nyman.
[sp]also surprised almost no one is posting in this thread, generally euro facepunchers rush towards threads that mention roma, to say how much they suck or something[/sp]
Great, a Roma pays for a meal and you just reinforce the idea that this way of life isn't for them. I know some Tigani who almost have a jewish like martyr complex that everyone hates them. While this may not be entirely unfounded based on their treatment, further such treatment can only serve to drive them away more.
Send em to America. We don't have any prejudice against them here.
Send em to America. We don't have any prejudice against them here.
we're too busy hating black people and hispanic people to care about some roma dudes.
See, if you had put 'Gypsy' in the title rather than Roma I'm sure this thread would have been filled with idiots talking about how much they casually hate them
See, if you had put 'Gypsy' in the title rather than Roma I'm sure this thread would have been filled with idiots talking about how much they casually hate them
I only passionately hate them.

Funny how the article reports this as fact bespite it only being accusations so far.
If they denied me breakfast I had paid for (or had paid by somebody else) I am calling the fucking cops.

detailing systemic abuse and police opinion that it would be best to kill them off.
They'd be quite unsympathetic.
Was she denied becouse she was romanian, or becouse of an unrelated reason
Was she denied becouse she was romanian, or becouse of an unrelated reason
because she was a roma, did you not read the title?
because she was a roma, did you not read the title?
lol, denies breakfast to Roma Guest is not the same as guest denied because she was Romani
lol, denies breakfast to Roma Guest is not the same as guest denied because she was Romani
its what has been implied and seems to be the topic of the article
its what has been implied and seems to be the topic of the article
"Implied" is a keyword here
When she entered the restaurant a waiter asked for her room card, after she had showed it she was forced the sit in the lobby while the waiter went to get her breakfast (normally you enter the restaurant and pick your own breakfast from the buffet)
Already multiple racist posters showing up.
The justification of Roma discrimination is nothing but pure racism and it's fucking sickening that this mindset is still somehow accepted in modern society. Especially in a supposedly progressive country like Sweden.
Was she denied becouse she was romanian, or becouse of an unrelated reason
The fuck are you implying you polish cunt
Was she denied becouse she was romanian, or becouse of an unrelated reason
all I hear these days from Europe is all about these Romanians going around doing all kinds of fucked up things
Funny how the article reports this as fact bespite it only being accusations so far.
Funny to see a Swede in denial.
when are people going to stop mixing up romanians and gypsies there aren't only gypsies in romania you know
we're too busy hating black people and hispanic people to care about some roma dudes.
I guess I shouldn't bring up African Immigrants being mistreated in Europe either.
Funny to see a Swede in denial.
I'm sorry, do you have some information not available to the rest of us?
all I hear these days from Europe is all about these Romanians going around doing all kinds of fucked up things
And people wonder why gypsies in Romania are being treated like the worst plague. Gee, I dunno, maybe because they're ruining our reputation?
I remember when I thought Roma referred to Romanian...
well to be fair I only dislike romas because my experience with them has been rather negative. I've met about 20 diffrents romas and almost all of them act like dicks, thinking they are better then you, jack gas from petrol-stations, demand special treatment and act like general assholes. The only positive is two romani brothers and their mom whom I once met which were chill and didn't press their identity on me. Same thing with other immigrants. Not everyone are bad apples. Judge a person as an individual, not as their stereotype. Of course, seeing as she only wore her traditional dress and wanted a breakfast SHE PAID FOR and then was discriminated against because of her identity is obviously wrong.
lol, denies breakfast to Roma Guest is not the same as guest denied because she was Romani
What else do you think might be the reason for denying her entry?
