Otherwise, they would be left in the change-making millennial dust. This premise was grounded in what I now call the myth of inevitability. Although I worked hard to increase civic engagement, activism and community involvement amongst my peers, deep down inside, I believed that the odds were in our favor. We would inevitably win the culture wars because of our sheer size and diversity. I believed that increasing our involvement and voice would make the difference of when the United States would be transformed to reflect our values, not if. I was not alone. Others deeply believed this to be true, too. But there are a few important factors that we forgot to consider. First, the country isn't just young and diverse. It is also getting old very quickly. The second major demographic "drama" detailed by Pew is one of older Americans living longer than ever before. Ten thousand baby boomers will turn 65 every single day between now and 2030. For the first time, by 2060, there will be almost as many Americans older than 85 as younger than 5. Thus the joke about "waiting for the older generation to die off" to see our political and social goals realized isn't just crass: It not a realistic path to social change. And that's not all. There are other cultural realities standing in the way of an "inevitable" political takeover.
Uh. It wasn't a joke. When the old generation dies, social change happens. This has happened with every generation. It was one of the reasons why when those from the 1800s started dying off, there was the civil rights movement.

Or the social considerations of an entire generation dying out?
What about the effects of extended lifespans? Or the social considerations of an entire generation dying out?
I'm not saying it has to happen. But the facts are that they're the ones electing idiots and clinging to bigoted ideas by our standards. They fought for the right to vote and cling to it, while this generation is somewhat shrugged towards the process.
What about the effects of extended lifespans? Or the social considerations of an entire generation dying out?
The process will just be slower.
What about the effects of extended lifespans? Or the social considerations of an entire generation dying out?
We'll just have to wait a few extra years for the bigots to die off before we can get a marginally less bigoted generation to start voting.
We'll just have to wait a few extra years for the bigots to die off before we can get a marginally less bigoted generation to start voting.
Glad everyone has so much faith in the Rust generation.
We'll just have to wait a few extra years for the bigots to die off before we can get a marginally less bigoted generation to start voting.
Then it will be our duty to become bigoted and carry on the tradition.
Then it will be our duty to become bigoted and carry on the tradition.
Our own flavor of bigotry. Who knows who we'll hate next.
Our own flavor of bigotry. Who knows who we'll hate next.
"Bronies."
Our own flavor of bigotry. Who knows who we'll hate next.
We'll enact thin privileged laws.
Pinays? Botanists? A.I.s?

One child, one grandchild, and one great grandchild. So in the time it took for that bigot to die, you have already another three generations on the plate, and all those generations bicker and hate each other because they are against each others opinions. In the end, they'll vote some idiot like Obama or Romney because, "HES WITH MAH OPINIONS" and the whole vicious cycle repeats. The Civil Rights movement was rolling thanks to Prohibition, and the changing of the arts. Not because some guy got a bullet in his head, or because some old hag choked. Sure maybe some people got shot during Prohibition, but when you take a look back at it, the mafia was already bankrolling the entire Civil Rights Movement in the 1920's to fuckover the Ku Klux Klan which was muscling on their business in the South. The only thing which stalled the inevitable for the KKK was the fact the 2nd World War broke out. You can't honestly say with a straight face that someone died and the entire civil rights movement happened. :v:
"Back in my day, we looked down on people that wanted a committed relationship with a robot, now all these free lovin' sexbots are bringin down the fall of man! Hell, I remember when they were just called computers and computer voice synthesis was the butt of a joke!"
I'll make sure to put my playstation in its original box from the 90s for my grandchildren to discover :')
the problem is in my grandmas day the fucking politicians retired by the time they were in their 60s, now the mean age in congress is rapidly approaching 65+ and these old boomers are full of shit and corrupt as fuck when it comes to lobbies and campaign finances. that's why we have a supreme court declaring money is equal to speech and that corporations have religious freedoms, when our representatives and judges are so completely out of touch with the real world then they probably should step down.
Glad everyone has so much faith in the Rust generation.
We were known as the mingebag generation once, you know. Gotta have faith, it's all we got.
It's interesting to think that we're only slowing ourselves down as a race when we find a way to extend our lifespans.

I dunno. I see bronies, furries, fat-activists, anti-vaxxers, and social justice warriors and can't help but feel afraid that these people are our future.
However, we also have the internet. If I hadn't seen the debates and evidence on these forums, I'd probably still share my dad's view that prisons should exist solely to punish prisoners. Thanks to the net, we're getting an unprecendented exposure to new ideas and cultures which will, hopefully, reduce each generation's bigotry by a wee bit. Or we may find everyone doubles down on their bigotry, so maybe we need some peer pressure as well, who knows.
It's interesting to think that we're only slowing ourselves down as a race when we find a way to extend our lifespans.
If you mean we will stop evolving that is untrue, we will just start artificially evolving and improving our selves and we wont need to die for it to happen.
Change is happening. You're going to see unemployment just becoming more and more of an issue. The jobs are never coming back. The people themselves are obsolete in the current system. Things will shift or you'll see everything collapse.
I dunno. why is it assumed that every generation that came before the present one is considered more bigoted? what if we end up going in the opposite direction in the future?
why is it assumed that every generation that came before the present one is considered more bigoted? what if we end up going in the opposite direction in the future?
Because historically they have been, at least in the last 200 years. [editline]17th April 2014[/editline] Martin Luther King jr. died within most of our parent's lifetimes. [editline]17th April 2014[/editline] Do you know this picture: She's not even 60 yet.
