It wouldn't ever reach a speed that would be more dangerous than getting out, risking running yourself with your car.
Also, a real driver would let the breaks go, and regained at least steering control over the car, and then slowed down carefully, instead of just slamming the brakes.

They bailed because there's a huge ass hill just around that corner. You can tell because of the angle of the sidewalk and the cars in the driveways.
