• India says Chinese troops crossed Himalayan border
India has asked China to withdraw troops it says have moved into disputed territory near the two countries' de facto border in the Himalayas. The foreign ministry asked China to "maintain the status quo" that existed before the alleged incursion. India says Chinese troops erected a camp on its side of the ill-defined frontier in Ladakh region last week. China denies violating Indian territory. The two sides are holding talks to resolve the row. "I would like to say we have all resolved all previous incidents peacefully and it is our hope that we would resolve this incident too peacefully," Indian foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told reporters on Tuesday. Mr Akbaruddin said the Chinese ambassador in Delhi had been summoned to the foreign ministry on 15 April when India complained about China's actions. An Indian official quoted by the Associated Press news agency said Chinese troops had strayed 10km (six miles) into Indian territory on 15 April and put up tents in the Depsang valley in Ladakh in eastern Kashmir.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-22265133
If I'm not mistaken, in the past China has supposedly entered peace talks with India, offering an alliance, and when India's guard was down they invaded and captured a good deal of land. India managed to take most of it back. In either case, India doesn't trust China, and probably never will. This is dangerous.
especially when both sides have stockpiles of nuclear weapons and could pretty much kill each other utterly.
especially when both sides have stockpiles of nuclear weapons and could pretty much kill each other utterly.
I think both sides are smart enough not to use them. But China needs to back the fuck off. The fact they've established a camp on the Indian side of the border means they're trying to push back the lines again.
i'm actually more worried about stupid generals than chinese or indian leadership, chinese generals for instance can do some pretty insane stuff and get away with it.
But knowing that, would China give their generals the power to authorize a nuclear strike?
But knowing that, would China give their generals the power to authorize a nuclear strike?
it could just escalate, but seriously this is probably nothing as usual, just some dickwaving.
One day we will all completely wipe each other out and then there will be peace at last.
But knowing that, would China give their generals the power to authorize a nuclear strike?
I'd imagine you'd have to be a bit higher up on the food chain to authorize a nuclear strike.
Doesn't China also have a bad habit of "accidentally" crossing into Russian territory as well?
China is making a big mistake, India be crazy.
More dick waving. Just what the world needs right now. Fuck off, China.
I think we've exhausted this metaphor. It may have worked for NK, but this is quite a bigger fish. At what point can we stop to consider that this maybe strategic poising?
Doesn't China also have a bad habit of "accidentally" crossing into Russian territory as well?
Considering Russia has a habit of "accidentally" flying over Chinese (and everyone's) airspace, I'd say they're even on that.
Doesn't China also have a bad habit of "accidentally" crossing into Russian territory as well?
No they don't (can't find a single source about either China or Russia crossing each other's borders). But Russia has a habit of entering other nation's airspace.
Fun fact: Chinese troops would openly shoot Tibetan pilgrims who tried to cross this border. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=841_1231202410
Doesn't China also have a bad habit of "accidentally" crossing into Russian territory as well?
They've done it to Japan (IIRC), but probably not Russia.
especially when both sides have stockpiles of nuclear weapons and could pretty much kill each other utterly.
Nuclear weapons are political dickwaving tools, nobody in their right mind would use them. When a ICBM is launched there is only a minute or so to determine if it's going to come at you or not before the warhead(s) detach and start their re-entry. All that's needed for a total nuclear war is for a ICBM launched by China or India even having a hint of going at the general direction of any nuclear power.
Six miles into another country in the middle of nowhere, okay. Major dispute.
China seems like a bad behaving child. An immature bully.
China seems like a bad behaving child. An immature bully.
They seem rather shrewd, ruthless opportunists.
Six miles into another country in the middle of nowhere, okay. Major dispute.
That's still enough for most countries to consider as a declaration of war.
There is no border between China and India in Himalaya; it's miles and miles of disputed territory between China, India and Pakistan. China entered this disputed territory which India considers their territory, and sees it as a provocation. However, India has also entered the disputed territories with troops, and China, considering the disputed territory theirs, viewed the Indian movement as an aggression towards China. So both parties are at fault for not solving this dispute peacefully.
That's why both parties keep their troops outside of said territory and maintain a status quo.
Except they don't, both parties have had military presence in the disputed territories!
They've done it to Japan (IIRC), but probably not Russia.
Definitely have. China and Russia have actually been involved in border skirmishes, and during the Sino-Soviet split, Mao actually ordered the construction of massive bunker systems throughout Beijing, expecting inter-communist nuclear war.
