http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/6f9f628aed/baby-it-s-cold-outside [sp]I lied in the title, the lyrics were not made "rapey" for the video, those are the actual lyrics[/sp]
I never felt them to be "Rapey" I always though of it as playful banter between couples, but whatever.
All I remember is that this song made Sayyid Qutb of the Muslim Brotherhood really, really mad and he basically described America as a land of debauchery and decadence
speaking of rapey
These two songs are about a serial rapist. Yeah, that's a fine long sharp knife
I never felt them to be "Rapey" I always though of it as playful banter between couples, but whatever.
I think the reason people see so much disturbing subtext in this song is because the couple who preformed it hated eachother and the husband abused the wife. Unless i'm thinking of something else
Thought the video was a funny interpretation but can't tell if they just made a joke or if they legitimately believe that this is a song about rape and kidnap and that it's actually disgusting.
Thought the video was a funny interpretation but can't tell if they just made a joke or if they legitimately believe that this is a song about rape and kidnap and that it's actually disgusting.
the song is actually pretty rapey hes trying to get the woman drunk so that he can fuck her and is not taking no for an answer. its just set to a nice tune.. if this was a skit on i love lucy or any other form of media from that time period it would not even be a question [editline]19th December 2015[/editline]
tbh you can really take any lyrics and put nearly any subtext to them.
that's pretty silly the woman actually says "the answer is no" how much clearer can it get?
the song is actually pretty rapey hes trying to get the woman drunk so that he can fuck her and is not taking no for an answer. its just set to a nice tune.. if this was a skit on i love lucy or any other form of media from that time period it would not even be a question
except that when it was originally written it was intended that "The mouse [typically the woman] wants to stay and enjoy themselves, but feels obligated to return home, worried what family and neighbours will think if they stay.[4]" the mouse needs help with being convinced to stay, and finally decides that its cold outside so the mouse will stay after all and enjoy themselves. its only in recent years that people twisted it to mean that the mouse genuinely wants to leave and put in themes that werent there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_It's_Cold_Outside nice try tho
are you drunk or just dont understand the concept of flirting?
hahahaha yeah go ahead and "flirt" like that and you'll end up in jail is this normal responses that you and sgt napalm are hearing from the women you're "wooing" so you think this is not creepy? boy i forgot what forum i was posting on. sorry i'll take off from this thread because you guys are prolly getting laid all the time with lots of alcohol and begging im prolly just getting trolled or i hope i am because this is just sad
"I ought to say no, no, no sir" (she should say no, but doesnt want to) "At least I'm gonna say that I tried" (if people question me about it im just gonna say that i tried so that i can make it look like i didnt want to stay) the end of every other verse is her convincing herself to stay because she wants to stay "Well, maybe just a half a drink more" "Ah but it's cold outside" "Well, maybe just a cigarette more" the artist himself, when he wrote this song, specifically wrote this song so that the "mouse" actively wants to stay. please explain to me how he is incorrect in his interpretation of his own work. i want the answer to this question, and not just more interpretations of verse. this is the central argument; the artist himself said she wants to stay.
hahahaha yeah go ahead and "flirt" like that and you'll end up in jail is this normal responses that you and sgt napalm are hearing from the women you're "wooing" so you think this is not creepy? boy i forgot what forum i was posting on. sorry i'll take off from this thread because you guys are prolly getting laid all the time with lots of alcohol and begging im prolly just getting trolled or i hope i am because this is just sad
in 2015 these lyrics undeniably sound creepy, especially the whats in this drink line. keep in mind this was written in the 1940s. date rape and drugging is more embedded into society's consciousness today than it was then. that doesnt change the fact that when this song was written the artist intended and envisioned it totally differently than how it might be interpreted today.

You are throwing actual tantrums over the interpretation of song lyrics. It doesn't matter how you listen to it. I mean, I've always seen it as Man In The Moon's interpretation.
I never felt them to be "Rapey" I always though of it as playful banter between couples, but whatever.
But hey, that's just me.
idk what went on the past few years that I missed but date rape isn't the first or second thing that pops into my mind when I listen to a song. Even if the lyrics has the woman asking whats in the drink its pretty damn obvious that its not a fucking literal statement.
i actually laughed at this statement im not throwing a tantrum, forum shark is getting pretty heated tho he called me a fucking retard lol this is just gold i thought these exact same thoughts when i heard this song and I was 12 (not making any of this up) and my older turbo-liberal sister was like "this song is creepy!" and I was like naaaah it isn't chill out he isn't raping anyone he just is being insistent and its a song then i grew up, have had multiple relationships and heard this song again and wow it clicked that this dude is a predator. of course he's going to write the part of the girl thinking, "man, i'd love to bang this guy but what would everyone think! I should resist a lil bit and play hard to get." except she isn't playing hard to get. shes fuckin trying to dip and is basically being begged to stay and fuck. lets not play dumb here. thanks sgt napalm for at the very least admitting these lyrics are in fact creepy forum shark i cant take you seriously and lord of boxes is a troll whos already on my ignore list
i did some more digging, this is the movie the song's from. you can see in this clip that the "whats in this drink" line means that its just a gross fucking drink he made. just because you think its about something else doesnt make it true. this adds tons of additional context to the situation.
Sheesh, it was just a funny video, did not mean for a debate to break out

Honest question Penguiin, do you think "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is about a kids mom cheating with Santa?
or; that it is really strong and is just liquor good investigative work. the song on the whole is creepy bro and is inappropriate in 2015 like you said. back then, there were also a lot of pretty subtle racist songs and people loved them and jammed out to them all the time. now, we don't play them because they are fucking racist. lol how is this any different
because this song is fundamentally about a couple that wants to stay together and be in love, not a song to make fun of the blacks [editline]19th December 2015[/editline] different interpretations dont make the song inappropriate. tons of songs have the word gay in them, which means something different today than it did yesteryear. doesnt mean that all songs with the word gay in them are about homosexuality; us being more likely to think about date rape doesnt make this song about rape.
Honest question Penguiin, do you think "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is about a kids mom cheating with Santa?
yes of course. santa claus is real and he needs to be apprehended for being a piece of shit cheater. mrs claus is hopefully gonna take half the north pole and his sleigh in the divorce
yes of course. santa claus is real and he needs to be apprehended for being a piece of shit cheater. mrs claus is hopefully gonna take half the north pole and his sleigh in the divorce
you got it all wrong you know how sometimes in movies the son finds out that the mailman is his real father? what is santa but a mystical mailman? clearly its about a boy discovering who his real father is and entering an existential crisis.
for real though, my argument is not "what the artist intended" my argument is about what is heard in the form of words that convey messages. i can't know what this dude is thinking in his mind unless i go do a bunch of research. oh that painting of the melted clocks? you're an idiot if you dont know what it's actually about. what he was thinking about was happiness and emotions. i mean if you read the wikipedia page youd know that i mean don't just look at the painting and see a bunch of melted clocks ya moron = this thread [editline]19th December 2015[/editline] im gonna backflip out of this thread and go date rape drug myself and go to sleep peace out
and my argument is that such interpretations are misguided and off-base. it is reading into context that was never there in the first place, it is context invented entirely by us. turning to the historical context reveals its true meaning and dispels myths, such as the one that this is a song about rape. it also gives us more insight into what was meant to be conveyed. this is not a reach as you seem to imply it is, it's acknowledgement of the facts. [editline]19th December 2015[/editline]
im gonna backflip out of this thread and go date rape drug myself and go to sleep peace out
aiight was fun take care
Songs can be interpreted in many different forms and expressions. Even if the artist comes out and says one thing, with enough supporting evidence and convincing academic language, other theses can arise and be prominent, If you want a prime example, just look at any Pearl Jam song. Stop shit posting up a thread because someone else thinks a song means something other than what you think. Both of you. I mean isn't the point of this video that, when sang with a difference cadence and put alongside a video of a man forcing himself on a woman, the song does come off as rapey?
Im annoyed with people looking into everything in some pseudo-progressive social light when clearly things shouldn't even be.
This is your first mistake. Censoring (Or let's be real, in this case flaming) other people's theories because you don't agree with their social politics only makes you look like an ass. I'd say just about anything is fair game, especially a song written in god damn 1944. If I can enroll in a college course based around devising theses on something like Mad Men, people can do it with music.
growing up I pretty much figured it was a pushy dude trying to get a girl to drink more so she wouldn't leave. now that i've gone through relationships and known some scummy people, I think the song is a bit creepy, but really it's up to the performers to give it the context of either playful banter or scummy behavior. the song was recorded so so long ago that i'll give it the benefit of the doubt and say it was intended to be playful banter between an already acquainted couple, but you never know! merry christmas.
Hey guys what's up
Honestly, without a full list of lyrics available, hearing it on the radio makes it sound extremely rapey. Given that its pretty much someone trying desperately to convince someone else to stay, that sort of sets the tone. "The answer is no" is pretty well explained. "You've really been great" sounds like someone trying to leave before things get ugly "Whats in this drink?" I mean, cmon. "how could you do this thing to me?" is pretty much the mentality of someone entitled who thinks the other person is obligated to sleep with them. and then consider this set of lyrics from one side: "I really cant stay" "I've got to go away" "This evening has been so very nice" "my mother will start to worry" "my father will be pacing the floor" Clearly, they want to leave. I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought this.
I never felt them to be "Rapey" I always though of it as playful banter between couples, but whatever.
It think it just tiptoes over the line as far as banter goes. Like after about the eighth time she essentially says no it gets a little weird.
