To be honest, I've never really pondered this question.
Good thing we have middle-school philosophers (AKA everyone on the internet under the age of 15) to help us with life's greatest mysteries.
It doesn't require CSS; a lot of stuff just pulls content from it. This kid is a dumbass.
"Garry's Mod is not a Mod"
Wat

So many servers use CS:S content that it's practically a requirement.

Garry's mod used to require at least one source mod in your library for it to function properly - I'm not sure this is still the case however - and the most commonly used game for that matter was Counter Strike Source. Hell, there's still a CS:S+Garry's Mod bundle on steam that costs 25€ (because for some reason Cs:s is still sold at a whopping 20€) because so much stuff in the game requires cs:s content to work properly.
Garry's Mod now runs on its own engine -- since 12 I believe, meaning that it is no longer a mod.

Why isn't it called Garry's Game then? Checkmate.
Why isn't it called Garry's Game then? Checkmate.
Because it was originally a mod, but now it's not. It's a name people know, so there's really no need to change it.
Garry's Mod 9 doesn't really requires HL2, CSS or TF2 to work.
Source SDK includes HL2 contents.

I don't think you know what a joke is.
Imo gmod is somewhere in limbo between a mod and a game. Tbh I would liken it more to something like a really really novel tool. It runs standalone, it comes with its own content, however it does practically require content from other entities on the steam market
Garry's Sandbox.
Looks nicer than I thought it would.
Source Sandbox seems a more fitting name for what it is now.
At least that's the conclusion I came to when pondering this very matter upon the porcelain throne just a few days ago.
if garry's mod isn't a mod.
why is it called garry's mod?
me: 1
fuck off: 0

It still runs on source, they've just changed around a load of shaders and replaced parts of the physics engine with Bullet.
Does Garry's Mod require assets from another source that doesn't come with it? It's a mod. If it can run all on its own 2 feet with nothing else, it isn't. It's that fucking simple
"I'm pretty sure it's pewdiepie"
Only one way to settle this....Garry?
This is so fucking spergy.
Why are they arguing so passionately about it? Why do they care so much?

10 years old discovering the internet.
You know you're new to the internet when you just blow really hard into the microphone to force everyone to listen to you.

It doesn't require another source game anymore. Gmod comes with its own version of the source engine. (and the source engine contains all the hl2 assets)

I only have gmod installed, no other source games.
Well honestly I still think the game is considered a mod, mostly because it relies so heavily on game assets from other source games that are not included in the base game.

That's kind of up to the mods. I personally view gmod as a game engine.
It's the base source engine scriptable with lua which happens to come with some example games/mods/whatever (sandbox and tts)
There's no generally agreed upon definition of "mod" so arguing is pretty pointless. Calling it a mod, a standalone mod and a game are all okay in my book because honestly it makes no difference.
Most works are more or less derivative anyway.
I liked the random "Jeremy, I just had fried chicken" around 1:58 in the middle of everything.
Why can't a mod be a game as well.
I think They Hunger is a great game on it's own.

you're using poor wording here, Gmod run's on it's own fork of the source engine. Before version 12 it ran on whatever the newest half-life game ran on.

Yes, but it still doesn't make it a mod. It's like saying Titanfall is a mod because it uses Source.
