What is wrong with using AutoTune?
To a degree, yes, it may remove some of the talent needed to sing. However, it's also just another cool tool to use. Kanye West describes it as "The funnest thing to use", and is dismayed about the general opinion of it because he finds it fun.
What exactly does autotune do that makes people dislike it so much?
I personally think it adds a neat feel to music.

Everything
It sounds like overly processed electronic crap that removes all passion and emotion from one's voice.
It sounds like overly processed electronic crap that removes all passion and emotion from one's voice.
it gives a neat robotic/electronic feel to the voice, though, which is likely what they are going for.
I feel horrible every time I hear some fucking asshole on the radio make millions of dollars for talking into a mic and letting the computer correct his/her horrible off pitch singing when there are a lot of classically trained or gifted singers whose talents are being wasted.
It's heresy
Mainstream autotuners are generally awful.
But NO not all artists that use it sound awful.

Well duh that's where it was for in the first place.
:smug:
But I get your point.

baby baby baby ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
BABY BABY BABY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Some artists do not need it.

But I still like the song.
Autotune has an uncessarily bad reputation because people don't know what it is and what it's used for.
You can either use it as an effect. Nothing wrong with that. It just sounds cool.
You can also use it as a tool (99 % of all recording artists use it) to fix small mistakes in an otherwise perfect performance.
It's a myth that autotune can make a tonedeaf person sing. Singing is much much more than just keeping pitch.
And for autotuning to not get blatantly obvious, you still need to be able to keep pitch well. It's not something that magically can perfect an awful singing performance.
If you want to ban autotune, you might as well ban delay, compression, equalizing, reverb, vocoding, and other unnatural effects which make a performance shine.
it used to be funny self parody but now i just want to falcon punch my speakers
I'd like to get my hands of an auto-tuner and see how much it can be abused.
There was a song recently by T-Pain and some other guy, and they used autotune in the chorus. He would sing a line, then the pitch would go like "dulelelee" higher, which was a pretty cool effect.
The problem with it is some people just use it to correct mistakes, which means they don't have to be a talented singer to sound good on record, taking some of the skill out of making music.
I don't mind auto-tune when used in moderation, or as an effect. Daft Punk are the best example I can think of.

This is bullshit.

Care to elaborate?
Because I've seen lines of dialogue pulled from video games which have been autotuned to make it sound like the character is singing.

That's using it prely as an effect. It doesn't sound natural. It's not meant to. You cannot autotune your way into sounding like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, or Michael Jackson.
Autotune is not in itself evil, but merely another tool in a musician's repertoire.
For instance, behold the Symphony of Science :

The same tool can be used for good or evil. That said, it has been horribly abused in mainstream music.

What I was trying to do was make the point that Soulja Boy can't sing but does so anyway (seemingly without autotune) so maybe he SHOULD use autotune, god I don't know what's worse
as well, while you do have all those things of people autotuning bits of videos and news to make it musical, they also combine this with a healthy knowledge of rhythm and the way people talk to create this, and use the autotune to make it sound as if they are singing, although not very well.
it's a tool, bro.

A) You don't know what you're talking about.
B) Robot autotuning isn't even that popular anymore.
C) Being a classically trained musician doesn't automatically mean you make amazing songs. Joe Satriani might be a great guitarist but his songs are still regressive and forgettable.
I like it when artists use autotune because they want to fuck up their voice, not when they use it because they can't sing and want to sound like they do.

Vocoder is better than Autotune, imo.

I really don't see an issue. Singing on pitch is just a small part of someone's vocal ability, there is so much more to it. There are a lot of people who use it as an effect, and that is a completely legitimate use.
I use autotune in a few different ways. I'll use it to correct the bad intonation on my bass guitar. It isn't a noticeable effect at all, but you would notice if my bass sounded out of tune. The bass guitar is rather annoying because the intonation is still rather off regardless of it being set up correctly.
Something I may do is to sing the part, autotune it and record it again singing. I find myself to be more on pitch. The finished track won't be autotuned. I'll also use it for harmonizing. I'll pitch shift the part up a third and pick the right scale and just sing with it. It works out pretty well. I really don't like putting it on my vocals though, because I usually don't like the sound and I'd rather refrain from it for personal reasons.
Now they have some harmonizer plugins, and those things are awesome. They use autotune, but I can't at all see a reason as to why it is bad because you can do incredible stuff with it.

I think this is also a pretty good example.
