• The end of a mobile era: Blackberry to 'retreat' from consumer market, lays off 4,500 employees
As rumored earlier this week, BlackBerry is to lay off 4,500 employees, over a third of its workforce. The layoff comes in an unexpected early earnings guidance release, in which the struggling manufacturer reveals it lost almost $1 billion last quarter.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/20/4753080/blackberry-cutting-4500-jobs-shifts-focus-to-prosumer-and-enterprise
I'm not surprised, tbh. I've got a bunch of friends who have BBs, and they end up regretting getting them over the iPhone or Samsung phones (which make it easier to use social apps like FB, Instagram, Twitter etc). BB didn't even have Skype on it until recently.
If they had switched to android they probably would have stood a chance.
Feel sorry for all the people that won't have work, don't feel sorry for that fucking thing called a phone.
I don't feel sorry, I feel sort of nostalgic seeing how in a matter of two years three former phone giants are now dead or sold to other hands. You will be missed, Nokia, Motorola, RIM.
I don't think they can blame anyone for what's been happening other than themselves. Through not "evolving" with the current market on time with the other companies to stupid idiotic bugs like Music playlists not accepting songs with numbers in the beginning because for some reason it causes the playlist to be read improperly Terrible coding with their BBM and Messaging App integration (would cause the messaging app to crash when the conversations went on too long) If your email inbox had more than 100 unread messages and you tried to "mark all as read" you'd get an "java.arraylist index out of bounds" error and you'd have to batterypull the phone to get the app to start again. I've had all those problems with my old Blackberry Tour (the 2nd to newest generation of phones, mind you. While their phones look good, they're underpowered and they don't program them well along with the TERRIBLE selection of apps. Maybe if they were to have gone with Android as an OS a while back they would still be floating. Now I have a Samsung GS4 and I'm not regretting making the switch. Well, maybe one reason because BBM isn't made for andro- OH WAIT IT IS now they're going to lose the ONE thing that kept the "hip" consumers buying blackberries. Yeah. I don't really like blackberries. Fruit's good though. Phone's shit. I'm hoping they get their shit together and start offering their numerous security patents or hopefully someone will buy them up and incorporate them into their company. Just a rumor, but I've heard from various people (including one from RIM, family friend) that they don't even QA test their apps that well. As long as the basic features work reliably, they release it. Again, that's a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt.
Well fuck, at this rate we will end up with only being able to choose between an Apple, Samsung or Windows device in the future
good night sweet trackball
good night sweet trackball
I'm not concerned about the trackball, I'm concerned about the death of mobile devices that are actually usable for typing things on.
If they had switched to android they probably would have stood a chance.
With Cyanogenmod likely looking for partnerships now would be a good time for blackberry to release some android phones running CM
I don't know why anyone bought a Blackberry.
It's because of the ridiculous as fuck tiny keys, was it manufactured for gnomes or something? That said a lot of people I know own blackberries and somehow manage to use them. A lot of them end up switching.
I don't know why anyone bought a Blackberry.
They are good business devices.
If they had switched to android they probably would have stood a chance.
They'd probably be the only Android phones with a fucking keyboard too, why are there no top-tier phones with a god damn keyboard.
I wonder if they're going to kill BB messenger for non-business contracts.
If they had switched to android they probably would have stood a chance.
Except the only Android OEM making money is Samsung, the rest take losses. Not sure why people always say this about Nokia and BB, that they would have done better on Android. Anyone who knows the market knows that's not true. Even if you make a great device on Android like the HTC and the One, it doesn't matter because Android is basically equated with Samsung by consumers.
Offer enterprise-level service. People wave you off because you aren't trendy enough. I blame consumers and business for their failure. The idea that if you don't refresh each year when your base product is near-bulletproof is such bullshit.

Nokia and BlackBerry both had a strong following of people who though they produced quality handsets and they both squandered it by making something that wasn't very useful compared to everything else.

They've already released less secure clones.
Blackberry's weren't all that bad. They were really popular in the mid and late 2000s, before Android caught on like it did.
BBM was going to be available for Android tomorrow morning, not that anyone's going to use it.
My gf bought a BB once (even with me being skeptical). When i found out i couldn't even make it connect to my wifi without paying some 'blackberry subscription' i cursed the damn thing to hell. She's been using Android since a loooong time now. :v:
Offer enterprise-level service.
Sure, if you define buggy clusterfuck devices that don't fucking work as enterprise.
I'm not concerned about the trackball, I'm concerned about the death of mobile devices that are actually usable for typing things on.
Maybe it's because I haven't used a phone that wasn't actually a phone, but I can't use the keypads on these newer phones, and I'm not sure how you're meant to. I press like 4 buttons at once, I feel like I need a toothpick as a typing aid.
Sure, if you define buggy clusterfuck devices that don't fucking work as enterprise.
My android phone crashed when you started Google Maps. If you want to get into bugs I can nitpick Android for hours.
My android phone crashed when you started Google Maps. If you want to get into bugs I can nitpick Android for hours.
Most of the bugs people try and tag on Android is actually the device manufacturers fault.
Are you typing with your palm or something?
Nah those buttons are just tiny as fuck, looks like they were designed for a baby's hands.
Most of the bugs people try and tag on Android is actually the device manufacturers fault.
When you go into the "Mobile networks" menu it automatically searches for networks even if you just want to press "Automatic" unusable.
