Summary from Slashdot:
"The iBooks Author EULA plainly tries to create an exclusive license for Apple to be the sole distributor of any worked created with it, but under the [United States] Copyright Act an exclusive license is a 'transfer of copyright ownership,' and under 17 U.S.C. 204 such a transfer 'is not valid unless an instrument of conveyance, or a note or memorandum of the transfer, is in writing and signed by the owner of the rights conveyed.' When authors rebel and take their work elsewhere, Apple has, at most, a claim for breach-of-EULA — but their damages are the failure to pay $0 for the program."
So basically, you are agreeing not to publish your book anywhere else but on Apples iBooks?
So apple has started to patent real people now. It begins.
I wouldn't be surprised that Apple would be trying to pull some bullshit like that.
That's stupid.
Fuck off Apple.
This is ridiculous.
Good luck getting any authors to sign on after this.
Not cool man, not cool.

But, according to Booth, despite the rather vague wording of the iBooks Author EULA, Apple doesn't outright "own" your content. "Apple doesn't pretend to have a copyright over the written text of any book that gets turned into an e-book with its software, and its definition of 'Work' doesn't extend to versions created with other software, electronic or otherwise," Booth explained.
"The contract only tries to control the version made using this software," Booth told Ars.
Having them locked in as a publisher is kind of a big deal dumbass.

no-one's locked in as a publisher. that doesn't even make any sense. Apple isn't a book publisher.
if you'd bother to read, you'd find out that the EULA is restricting the usage of the iBook Author files, which the article points out:
Technical limitations may make the restriction a moot point for the time being, as only Apple's own iBooks apps can even read the files generated by iBooks Author.
nice job calling me a dumbass without understanding what you are posting about, thanks for that.
How is this not obvious? Did you really expect Apple to provide free authoring software yet not require that books made from it be sold in their own ecosystem? It's the only way they can make money off of this.
Plus, it's not like you couldn't take the same content and publish it in another form, it's just that they don't want you using iBooks Author to do so.

iBooks Author can't export to any format other than Apple's proprietary iBook format, so I don't see what the problem is.
now retooling MPAA seeking missiles to target Apple.
oh my god tech journalism is literally only second worst to gaming journalism
This appears to cover only the iBook file you make, in theory you would still own the content and could still publish it yourself. I'd love to see this proven though because if Apple are locking in people who write books that is dumb as hell.

Kinda saw this coming. You know there's going to be a catch when you get a free piece of software from Apple.
Well what else are you going to do with a file that is only supported by iBooks and made in a format to view on iPads?
Wait, am I weird for thinking that it only being able to export in one format is fucking stupid?
Why can't you export in like PDF at least? (maybe with some of the interactive features removed)

You can... but at that point you might as well be using Apple's Pages or Microsoft Publisher.
Nice to see that Jobs's death hasn't stopped Apple from being an asshole.

Because of his wishes
one of the things he was literally recorded saying before he died (not literally right before he died, I mean in the general time frame before his death) was how we was willing to do anything to destroy the competition (specifically Android)
So basically it's saying the file MyBook.apple is only allowed to be used with Apple software?
Is that the just of it or am I missing it all?
