When Doom launches next year it will not support modding beyond the tools offered by SnapMap, Bethesda's Pete Hines has confirmed. SnapMap is the level editor that will launch with Doom in early 2016, and while id Software hasn't outlined the full extent to which the game can be customised with the tools, Hines highlighted some of its strengths and limitations in an interview with GameTrailers. ”Everything that we’re doing on the mod side will be through SnapMap,” Hines said when asked about modding tools in addition to SnapMap. No sense in buying it then. I wonder, if everyone who pre-ordered it would cancel theirs simultaneously in response to this, would they change their stance on mods? Probably not, they are stupid and greedy.
What the hell? I thought I heard that they confirmed full mod support a while ago. God dammit
Mood for this is effectively dead. Like, I'll still eventually get it just because it's Doom one way or the other. SnapMap is going to be like some mishmash of TimeSplitter's level editor and Forge - which means everything is going to become samey extremely fast. And have a memory limit. And they confirmed no outdoor areas. Welp.
Hey dude. We created this game back in the 90s that was easily modded and is still played TO THIS DAY. Let us completely remove that from our next game
That's a bummer but nothing unexpected. It seems like they're pushing the mainstream route. They know Doom will sell because it's Doom. Maybe if we're lucky unofficial mod support will be a thing.
Hey dude. We created this game back in the 90s that was easily modded and is still played TO THIS DAY. Let us completely remove that from our next game
Suddenly Doom 4 is only played for a few months before people go back to playing original Doom.
they might be so it won't last forever so they can sell a sequel or something in a year or two. This seems to be a recurring pattern especially with online only games which really prevent any mod support.
No sense in buying it then. I wonder, if everyone who pre-ordered it would cancel theirs simultaneously in response to this, would they change their stance on mods? Probably not, they are stupid and greedy.
"No sense in buying it then." Except for the game itself, I would imagine. If you pre-order/buy this for PS4/Xbone, why would you care about this?
Why would you even preorder a game if you're doing it for mods? No game comes out with an SDK anyway so wait for release and you might even get a discount.
No game comes out with an SDK anyway so wait for release and you might even get a discount.
Elder Scrolls Fallout 3/NV I wouldn't have bought Skyrim if it wasn't for knowing that it'd have a full SDK that I already knew how to use, and was going to have a ton of mods. So yeah - When engine-masterminds ID and modding powerhouse Bethesda came together, I expected a fantastic engine with an SDK - sue me. Especially given Doom's prior history and their return-to-roots thoughts. However, after Carmack bailed and we've heard tale after tale of disappointing tunes about Doom 4 - I'm not expecting anything all that great. There's also the development hell it's been in. The complete wrong turn it had initially. The disappointing E3 showcase. Questionable design decisions. I could go on. Anyone who preorders Doom 4 gets everything they deserve. :v:
but at quakecon they said there would be advanced mod tools for PC so what the fuck
but at quakecon they said there would be advanced mod tools for PC so what the fuck
What if SnapMap were the mod tools they were referring to? That would be fucking stupid.
Psst, everyone:
When Doom launches next year it will not support modding beyond the tools offered by SnapMap
Modding tools won't launch with Doom. Expect them sometime after launch.
Psst, everyone: Modding tools won't launch with Doom. Expect them sometime after launch.
Then why are they saying it in such a vague way
What. The. Fuck. This is absolutely infuriating. Even though DOOM3 had its problems, I used to do minor mods and whatnot 11 years ago. Heck, many people may not remember but it had a decent (albeit short lived) modding community that made some really cool stuff.
Then why are they saying it in such a vague way
Because they're being dummies? Who knows. Like, id should know better than to shun the modding community. Doom has lived on for so long because of mods. And even if it turns out that they really are shunning mods, it's not like that's going to stop them from existing. People will figure it out, and they will happen.
Wonder what he means by ”Everything that we’re doing on the mod side will be through SnapMap”. I hope there will be more to it besides what SnapMap offers, this surely can't be the only factor they plan for modding in DOOM.
As long as it gets some other modding tools after release, this is okay. Hell, the first game didn't even have modding tools on release, most WADs were just new levels.
Doesn't this just mean they're not developing tools other than SnapMap? The modding community can and has always done much more modding than was originally intended by the developers.
With a name like SnapMap it already sounds limiting as fuck, seriously? But I guess we will have to wait and see.
Can't let people mod it or someone will remove the repeating cutscene kill animations and fix the slow movement speed.
Just know that this is taken from the video interview.
Those SDKs were released a few months after the games released
My bad, I'm confusing it with Morrowind since mine came on a disk.
As long as it gets some other modding tools after release, this is okay. Hell, the first game didn't even have modding tools on release, most WADs were just new levels.
While initial WADs were basic due to the editing tools and how difficult it was to work with them, they are fundamentally different because they're true freeform 3D geometry with some basic engine limitations (draw distance, vertex count, no room over room, etc.) Snapmap is going to be like.. well, snapping predefined map pieces together. Not entirely fair to put them in the same boat.
I don't mind as long as snapmap is versatile as fuck. I mean recreating all of Ultimate Doom versatile.
Hang on, didn't they say we'd get "advanced scripting and modification tools" in addition to Snapmap? Or am I just remembering things around the wrong way?
Hang on, didn't they say we'd get "advanced scripting and modification tools" in addition to Snapmap? Not only does the game look slow and ~cinematic~ they also decide to kill the modding scene, which has allowed the original to live till this day. Certainly not buying this game now, it's basically a console port at this point.
Has a company saying that a game wont have mod support ever stopped the modding scene?
