I'm doing music for my Half-Life 2 zombie mod, but I'm stuck for ideas. I need to know what sort of songs to make. Should they have sound effects in to boost the atmosphere? Should I make all of them creepy and sad, or should I make some L4D2-esque rock ones to get the player excited? The mod is multiplayer and is about a zombie infection. Any help would be great, thanks.
Do a variety, make some sad ambitient music aswell as some industrial action filled stuff. I suggest you do use sound effects, but not 'obvious' sound effects so they feel like part of the game. Make the sound effects part of the music
I always thought that Dream Theater's "Disappear" has a perfect intro for a zombie-movie/game song.
Starts with some creepy noises and then a sad piano melody with cool effects comes in.

Wow, that's creepy. My friend, who is doing the models, is also doing music, and he wrote something similar on piano, minus the screeching sounds at the start. I could play something like that on guitar and distort it heavily, though.

If its a most electronic approach you're taking, you could check out artists like Burial and Boards of Canada, I think they both make very good atmospheric music. But if you're leaning more towards live instruments such as guitar and piano check out 'in a house in a heartbeat' from the 28 days later soundtrack, something like that is perfect for a zombie game/movie.

Thanks, I quite like 28 Days Later.
I should ask Varient_ to make the music :v:
it depends on the atmosphere of the mod. if its a more shoot-em-up zombie game then a lot of dark, energetic, tense music tends to be great. for more "creepy" scary games you want dark ambient, slow music. generally you want to begin composing once you have some general content in the mod. finish a level and then record yourself playing through it, open up your daw and start composing as you watch the recording.

Here's a WIP I've been working on. Sorry for the bad quality.

And how I forgot to give it a nice transition.
The very beginning sounds really bad in my opinion.

The part I enjoy the most is the ending. The beginning part has a strange inconsistency to it, I think.

Sweet Jesus, you really need to tune your guitar and re-record that.
I made this full song on my guitar, I think it would fit the style you are looking for.

I don't really like that recording you did.. It really needs to sound better to make it fit.

Mother of God, that sounds brilliant.

Thank you, I make alot of different type's of music. I remember hearing about an gamemaker music forum where musicians post their work or something among that, maybe someone can tell you about that site there you could look for music on your mod or ask people to find something you are allowed to use.
What kind of mod is it(action packed, survival based)? I've made a lot of tunes for friends movie-projects and game-projects, and most of the time, I get inspiration from something visual or similar.
It's usually wise to decide what kind of mood you're going for and the surroundings(is it in the future, present). I've also found that ambient works really great with horror, instead of your standard horror-movie tunes(it also makes it a bit easier to make). A great mix of samples and synths should do the trick.
Also, make sure you get the tracks to blend in with the ambience of the levels, it really takes it to a new level.

There's a mix of moods for the songs, most songs will be triggered in-map, so if I were to make a lonely dock or something, there would be a trigger outside of spawn that would play a sad track. If there's a crescendo area in which the survivors must fight off zombies as they wait for rescue, I could trigger a loud distorted song to help get them excited.

New WIP song, same bad quality but with 90% less tuning failure and a major fucking increased length.
Seriously dude, if you're going to be playing some sort of melody, please use a metronome. It sounds really out of time.
It's pretty bad, sorry. The quality is awful and as thaard said it's out of time. The composition and arrangement isn't great either, there's a few ok bits but a lot of it is a mess with no real chord progression or solid melody.

And again I might show you something you might like (I did this)

Piano too, and I think you look after this sort of moody style! I have made so much damn more of that.
