• Coming soon in 2016: Some states will require a passport to enter through an airport; driver license
If Steven Spielberg were to stop you on the street next year and invite you to star in his movie on the condition that leave right now for the airport without stopping at home, your opportunity at fame and fortune would be squandered if you happened to be a resident of New York, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Louisiana, or American Samoa. The reason: At some point in 2016—the precise date hasn’t yet been announced—driver’s licenses from those states will no longer be considered sufficient to clear airport security and board an airplane. This new policy is a result of the Real ID act, passed by Congress in 2005 as a counterterrorism measure to standardize the reliability and efficacy of personal identification. Unfortunately, the driver’s licenses of that handful of states did not make the cut, failing to provide enough security features in the cards themselves or enough verification of identity and immigration status in the application processes.
http://time.com/money/4042896/drivers-license-airport-security-states-passport/
So the drivers licenses of a few states weren't secure enough. They need to re issue some updated ones then.
http://time.com/money/4042896/drivers-license-airport-security-states-passport/
Wouldn't it be simply to standardize your drivers licenses? Or even just introduce a universal ID card that acts as everything needed for identification.
It wouldn't it be simply to standardize your drivers licenses? Or. Introduce a universal ID card that acts as everything needed for identification, Drivers, Medical, Etc.
The thing about a driver's license is that it's prime purpose is not an ID, it's a license to drive on public roads.
So the drivers licenses of a few states weren't secure enough. Yep, this is sure to nip terrorism right in the bud.
Yep, this is sure to nip terrorism right in the bud.
but muh counterterrorism
These laws need struck down fast, it's only a matter of time before you'll need a special permit just to leave the fucking county.
These laws need struck down fast, it's only a matter of time before you'll need a special permit just to leave the fucking county.
It's sort of sneeky, its the same law that tightened up security in government facilities and special places like nuclear power plants or chemical depots, so you can't exactly strike it down, but compared to those, restricting IDs for airports seems silly when a drivers license is a standard ID in most places
So this is clearly the fault of the issuing states, does this mean they'll compensate domestic travelers for the $200 expense of having to get a passport? :doubt:
So this is clearly the fault of the issuing states, does this mean they'll compensate domestic travelers for the $200 expense of having to get a passport? :doubt:
If not then fukh that
So this is clearly the fault of the issuing states, does this mean they'll compensate domestic travelers for the $200 expense of having to get a passport? :doubt:
It's not even the expense, passports take half a year if you are lucky
This new policy is a result of the Real ID act, passed by Congress in 2005
I think the law sounds stupid, and I don't think you should need a passport to travel within the United States, but these states had a decade to comply with a known law but didn't? Did they just not want to, or was there a logistical issue with issuing new DLs?

The government mandated this. Several states chose not to comply and now their citizens pay for it. [editline]23rd September 2015[/editline] And this has been knowledge to the states for quite a while.
There is no way that there's enough actual danger present from people flying that requiring passports for domestic flights is necessary. I have my suspicions that this isn't even constitutional.
I got this fancy Passport ID which allows me only into Canada and Mexico from the US and it's higher authority than state or license, but not quite as much as a real Passport or birth cert. [editline]23rd September 2015[/editline] Plus, it looks so busy and weird I like it kind of
These laws need struck down fast, it's only a matter of time before you'll need a special permit just to leave the fucking county.
Isn't that called a passport?
It wouldn't it be simply to standardize your drivers licenses? Or. Introduce a universal ID card that acts as everything needed for identification, Drivers, Medical, Etc.
Here in British Columbia we have the BC ID Card. ...but even THAT requires a second piece of ID.
But what about the majority of people with no passports
But what about the majority of people with no passports
Sucks for them.
But what about the majority of people with no passports
Then those people in New York, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Louisiana, or American Samoa should complain to their state government.
county
That r is easily missable
These laws need struck down fast, it's only a matter of time before you'll need a special permit just to leave the fucking county.
Have you seen a Louisiana drivers license? I could almost fake one on an impact printer.
I've had the new New York license since I turned 21 over a year ago from NY, according to their site it is one of the most secure license in any state... http://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/nys-new-driver-license I have multiple flights planned next year and I don't currently have a passport so I wonder if it will be required.
I don't get how new York didn't pass the requirements, its id is one of the hardest to fake in the country.
this has some serious implications. procuring a passport is fucking expensive - over 100 bucks in most cases - and this will serve as a serious restriction of movement for the people who live in these states. this doesn't just mean that they have to go to another state to fly, they are grounded until they get a passport. any sort of additional fee for identification is a serious infringement on the ability to travel which is a right.
FYI this is for boarding an airplane, not getting off one. And Minnesota is fighting it. And the reason is that the act requires some changes to DL's that the states listed have not yet complied with. http://www.kare11.com/story/news/politics/2015/04/10/state-legislators-fight-real-id-act/25617075/ These states are literally the only ones who didnt bend over to the government. All the other states have changed their DL's

Yet they gave zero ways that it does so. "National ID" was repeated, but it's still state issued? It just has to meet certain security criteria. Am I missing something?

The federal government doesnt need to be sticking their fingers in the states licensing authority.
