Albums To Help You Through A Dark Period In Your Life

I'm not the one to talk about having "dark periods" in life.. maybe I just don't know what I'd call a dark period yet.
Music in this space will be depressive, but very uplifting too, maybe it demands connection with the listener to be fully appreciated or what have you.
I'll start with an album I haven't heard in years, but hearing it again brings back the feelings I had.

Beck - Sea Change
The music is soothing, but the melodies kind of embrace you slowly and Beck's Folk-esque vocals drive the music even further.

Both Neutral Milk Hotel albums.

I'm on my phone so cbf searching album art, but it depends on the mood.
Pink Floyd's The Wall, American Football's self titled and The Antler's Hospice are usually given a spin in those dark times. Oh right, and The Beatles Let It Be.
[sp]and not to be self indulgent, but the green ocean in the garden ;-)[/sp]
the entire nine inch nails discography was all I listened to in 2008-2009

Compared to his first few albums, this one is a lot different in that the words feel more directive and personal. Cohen himself is a depressive character but he's got an unmatched depth which I find endearing to hear.

I went through some shit and listened to these non stop. I'd just lie in bed and listen for hours on end and forget the world.

I find all 3 albums incredibly comforting now. There are some others that I listened to that I can't listen to any more without feeling very odd. Two Dancers by Wild Beasts fills me with incredible nerves whenever I listen to it because I slept to it on my first night of boarding school.
I almost went crazy. Then Eyedea talked me out of it

My 2 albums.
And no, this is not a joke.
Writing music has really helped me get rid of unwanted hatred and other negative emotions.

Yeah some people think it's weird, but I think once you realise the music is mainly yourself then it's all the more eye-opening.

Talked about this album a dozen times, but whenever I hear it.. it always brings me to a higher place in myself.

The Black Halo by Kamelot. It begins very darkly and introspectively and builds to a story of redemption, ending in this:

They are the first band I ever got really into, and I always return to this album several times a year.
i dont really listen to music when I'm feeling down. If I'm feeling "slow" I'll listen to something fast I guess.
this got me through my childhood though I guess

I owe a lot to Plastic Ono Band:

and Warren Haynes' Tales Of Ordinary Madness.

And here's where your mother sleeps
And here is the room where your brothers were born
Indentions in the sheets
Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore
And it's so sad to see the world agree
That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies
All when I'd want to keep white roses in their eyes
I know they buried her body with others'
Her sister and mother and 500 families
Saaad
Anyway my contribution, with "dark period" meaning the longest sigh-fest of my life.

semen stains the mountain tops
I know I post this in basically every thread, but it seems to fit your "dark but uplifting" description.

prolly the best for such a thing
In Rainbows got me through one
this album is actually really dark and sad but those stereolab hipsters always have to be ironic.

Might get crap for this first one but:

La Dispute - Somewhere at the Bottom of the River...
The lyrics were exactly what I needed to hear when I stumbled upon one of their videos on youtube and it just went from there. I know a lot of guys here don't like them but they mean a lot to me, this album in particular.
And its already been said but:

Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
Same as the first one.

I know it's kind of a weird choice, but this album is so complex in how uplifting and refreshing the dance music is on here, combined with its extremely sincere lyrics about the psychological distance between people. Home, the final track, is a beautiful, tragic song about accepting and enduring life in general, and takes me to a totally different place. It was the first song I voluntarily listened to after I graduated high school. The resounding throwback to the album's opener, in conjunction with the song's conclusive lyrics, is truly moving, for me at least.

And AK'z, that Beck album is Sea Change not Sea Life.
All these albums helped me keep my mind off my brush with insanity.

I have a hard time listening to this one because it brings back bad memories.
Pretty much any and every Atmosphere album including "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold".
A prime example of his older music that almost brings a tear to my eye when I listen:
the dogs dissolve and drain away
Or an extract from the (Arguably better) album
And the last one tore a picture from the pornographic page
all the pleasure points attacking, all the looks of love were staged!
and its a lie that youve been given, that just hurts you every day
so why should i lay here naked, when its just too far away
from anything you could call love, any love worth living for
so i'll sleep out in the gutter you can sleep here on the floor

For me personally this album helped me out a lot, a lot of the songs on the album are just amazing at keeping me relaxed and helping me forget about what's going on around me. Was my album of choice for my breakup a while back, played a huge part in keeping me together. A few upbeat songs in there too which is always good at keeping things from getting too depressing.

I'd say this. Incredibly beautiful, perhaps my favourite album ever.
