The 25-year-old was taking part in the first of two planned World Supersport series races, which went ahead despite torrential rain.
Antonelli was involved in a collision with Lorenzo Zanetti on the final corner of the opening lap of the race. He was rushed to hospitaly but later died from his injuries.

To be fair, this kind of racing is absurdly dangerous. Doesn't make it any less tragic, I always liked Antonelli. RIP, big guy. :(
Visibility was virtually zero for the riders, how was it not called off?
You can't even see anything from the recording, how the fuck did they give the go-ahead in those conditions?
It doesn't look that bad from this angle but he was struck by another rider after he hit the ground. Grisly stuff.
I guess the question is why a race would be held in these conditions? At these speeds bikes are plenty dangerous without a wet track as well.

Jesus. That was a hard hit.
They should have called off the race given the conditions.

Holy shit he got hit at full speed. It would be a miracle if he survived that!
holy fuck what a terrible slam
RIP
How did they not cancel this? How?
Shit I feel bad for the guy that hit him.
It's especially scary when your big brother races superbikes.
holy shit, it's a wonder he didn't die on the spot!
They really should get sued so hard, whoever gave the go ahead for the race i mean.
MOTOGP does have rain tires, its not purely slicks
why would you want to race in that kind of condition
makes no sense
Visibility was virtually zero for the riders, how was it not called off?
Nevermind the visibility, traction was virtually zero! I'm 100% for cars to run in the rain, but bikes barely have any traction in perfect conditions. To not call them in a rain like this is stupid.

Motorcycles barely have any traction on the best of days, though. Even with rain tires it's incredibly hard to get them to grip with that much rain coming down.
Do they get the option to not participate in bad weather?

In conditions like that, I'd think twice about taking my street bike out and that takes corners less sharply and much much more slower.
I bet they're really regretting the choice to not call off the race. I don't understand why they wouldn't.
there'd be questions asked about running an f1 or gt race in conditions like this, let alone bikes
Hell, I once came off my bike, going on a roundabout in heavy rain lke that but i was only going 10mph at the most.
Next step is to call off races with bad weather like this.
The environment is part of the challange imo

Yeah, but when that "challenge" kills, its not worth it.
You wouldn't let Football players play on solid ice would you?
Racers generally prepare for a set event time and don't like it when things get changed, get called off. It throws off their rhythm and this was probably a case of them wanting to still race + official agreement.

2001 AFC Divisional Playoff Game, they played on solid ice basically
RIP, takes specimen sized balls to race Superbikes in even the best of conditions.

Just Racing itself kill, its a life style.
Oh man, its bringing back all those awful memories of when Simoncelli died on track.
