Russia is increasingly being accused of war crimes over its actions in Syria
(UNITED NATIONS) — The General Assembly voted Russia off the U.N. Human Rights Council on Friday, a stunning rebuke to the country which is increasingly being accused of war crimes over its actions in Syria.
The 193-member General Assembly elected 14 members to 47-nation council, the U.N.’s main body charged with promoting and protecting human rights.
Russia, which received 112 votes, lost its regional seat to Hungary, with 144 votes, and Croatia with 112 votes.
Russia’s mission to the U.N. did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, China, Brazil, Rwanda, Hungary, Cuba, South Africa, Japan, Tunisia, the U.S. and U.K. all won seats on the council. Guatemala was the only country running for a seat beside Russia to not be elected.
Human rights groups had called for countries to reject the candidacies of Russia and Saudi Arabia, which has been accused of indiscriminate attacks against civilians in Yemen. Saudi Arabia’s election, however, was a foregone conclusion since it was running unopposed for its regional seat.
At least good ol Saudi Arabia retained their seat

The UN Human Rights Council is a joke anyway. Russia shouldn't feel bad for being kicked out.

It's sad that Human Rights groups need to call out the Human Rights Council for rewarding some of the worst human rights violators on earth.

It's a damn miracle Russia got removed at all.
Also I'm glad my country got a seat, especially over Russia.

Oh yeah Russia is the true evil on this world when other country such as Saudi Arabia or even the United States are still in this council.

I'll give you Saudi Arabia but despite how much of a shit America is sometimes, it's nowhere near as bad as Russia.
Remove Russia but not Saudi Arabia, okay.
Atleast Russia doesn't torture and execute people because they spoke negatively against islam or whatever other fucked 'crimes'.

Yes, despite state-sponsored discrimination against homosexuals, support of violent, brutal dictators, and their aggressive Soviet-style expansionism, Russia is a-okay.

Why Saudi Arabia was even the head of the council is beyond me. They're about as socially progressive as a third-world country.
Hell, Jordan would have been a better choice. It's at least making strides in a heavily unstable region.

How about Saudi Arabia and Russia both have awful examples of human rights, there problem solved.
They are regional seats and Saudi Arabia was unopposed, of course they weren't kicked out.
Like this doesn't mean that Russia is worse than Saudi Arabia, it means that Russia was just the worse in their specific region.

That's basically what I said in my post.

I was about to say this, thank you for giving some insight and not just pointless comparisons.
Oh yeah and the UK is fine even after selling illegal cluster bombs that went on to be dropped in Yemen.
the council is a joke as long as saudi 'lets shoot cluster bombs into hospitals and schools, and starve a country' arabia is on there

but, why? exactly?

It's a joke because the leader of the council is a huge human rights violator. They have metric tons of terrible crimes under their belt, more so than pretty much any other place in recent history, but are a part of this 'human rights' council. If you abandon your faith, you get sentenced to the death penalty there. They're deliberately bombing parts of Yeman's agricultural sector to starve them. They're also bombing open air markets, hospitals, schools, and mosques, and almost 50% of the dead are civilians, by using cluster bombs and white phosphorous. (and pretty much all of that stuff is supplied by the west)

what the fuck
how is this even possible
why does a human rights council have the ability to even decide who to kill period
were they created from an alternate reality where human rights involves being an asshole

my mistake, I misworded it, the death penalty for abandoning faith has nothing to do with the council, but its just one of the ways you can get the death penalty in saudi arabia, who is the leader of the council :v:

I know there's plenty of reasons to hate Russia, but you seem to hate it so much that makes me wonder if it's personal. Did Putin kill your whole family or something?

It's an eastern european meme at this point.
You can sometimes see even kids in my country saying "Russia is bad,Putin stinks!" But than you go and tell them why you think that and they are just like "uhhhh".
And yet, half of the countries left have worse human rights record than Russia.

Which half?
Which half?
To my best knowledge, those would be Iraq, Egypt, Rwanda, Cuba, China and of course Saudi Arabia. Situation in Tunisia is fragile and Brazil has issues with high inequality and repression of native populations.
Don't get me wrong, Russia is responsble for some shady shit but it isn't the moustache twirling evil villain that people portray it is. It's hypocrisy that they're thrown off the HR council whilst the Saudi cunts stay on.

There are 47 members in the HR council, so half would be significantly more. Also, other than perhaps Saudi Arabia and maybe Iraqi paramilitaries, no one is actively committing war crimes.
Countries such as Saudi Arabia need to be censured ASAP, but the fact is that there are way more deserving candidates in Eastern Europe than Russia, and this is an ultimately positive move. Russian war crimes in Syria haven't been covered as much as they should be.
I know there's plenty of reasons to hate Russia, but you seem to hate it so much that makes me wonder if it's personal.
I absolutely abhor war crimes and all the eager arm chair war crime apologists, so yes, I am absolutely happy that my country got Russia's seat.
