The Workers Party is widely expected to promote Mr Kim's third son, Kim Jong-un, to a senior position.
Observers believe a promotion would anoint him as the heir to his father, the self-styled Dear Leader.
Mr Kim, 68, is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008.
The Korean Central News Agency carried a short statement early on Tuesday announcing the party meeting.
"The conference of the WPK [Workers Party of Korea] for electing its supreme leadership body will take place in Pyongyang on 28 September," the statement said.
The announcement ends weeks of speculation about the date of the meeting, which was originally due to take place sometime early this month.
The news agency gave no indication of why it had been postponed.
There has been speculation that it was delayed because of severe flooding in the north of the country, or because the health of the leader has taken another turn for the worse.
Hopefully he will actually give a rats ass about his people.
Well this can either go somewhat good or horribly, horribly wrong
Probably someone with even more crazy to go around.
Daw, who will be the next leader?
It's a family name. Or do you honestly think that all koreans have Kim in their name?
And do you really hate all Asian names? You're mixing up a lot of cultures here.
Sample female names
China: Lanfen
India: Dakshina
Korea: Jae-Sun
Japan: Emiko
Pakistan: Javeria
That'd be the same thing as saying you hate European names which could range from Bodil to Adoncia.
Is he il?
it will be like the story of homefront, i tell you what.
Probably more bullshit lies, typical of the North Korean government.
I hope he falls down a flight of stairs in front of his 'glorious followers'.

Nah, Kim Jong-ok.
I honestly expected him to live forever like Big Brother. The North Koreans are sheep, it can't be that hard to use some lookalikes and stock footage to put on an "appearance" a couple times a year and scrub all references to his real age.

Brilliant.
Long live our glorious leader.
Un is expected to replace Il at Il's death. This has been suspected since 06. Un has been educated in the west and very well could turn towards us, or else make some progress. However, he could also be brainwashed and decide to commit glorious war for liberation of Korea, but it's hard to tell since we don't know shit.

In recent news the glorious leader has grown taller by 5 inches and lost 30 pounds, he will be appearing today to show off his glorious new body!
I would think there would be some power struggle.
