The Indiana House of Representatives approved a proposal Tuesday that would place the state's gay marriage ban in the state constitution, while leaving the door open to eventual approval of civil unions. The proposed ban, which cleared the chamber on 57-40 vote, now heads to the Indiana Senate, where members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are set to take up the issue. Voting yes were 57 Republicans. Voting no were 11 Republicans and 29 Democrats.
Source http://www.ibj.com/indiana-house-passes-revised-constitutional-gay-marriage-ban/PARAMS/article/45821 Still needs to get passed in the senate but still, fucked up.
Nothing like good ol' states' rights to discriminate against a minority.
Am I not surprised that America takes 1 step forward and 2 steps back? I just can't believe an issue like this still exists today; but then again, I can't help but believe religion is the reason.
I can't help but believe religion is the reason.
in that case you're believing the right thing
Even if it passes through the senate, there is still a two year period where it still has to be agreed upon before it would even come before voters, so I really doubt it will ever get added to the state constitution.
in that case you're believing the right thing
Slowing down human kind since AD 313
Slowing down human kind since AD 313
Are you implying that solely Christianity has to do with a gay marriage ban? ʇɐɥʍ
Are you implying that solely Christianity has to do with a gay marriage ban? ʇɐɥʍ
Your upside down what amuses me, but no I was merely joking at the length of time. But I understand how from the date you believed I was referring to only Christianity; sorry to bemuse you
Are you implying that solely Christianity has to do with a gay marriage ban? ʇɐɥʍ
You're right. Islam and Judaism too.
Big country, one state Change is only going in one direction and it's not backwards
Very true; I can't let myself generalize that way. It just saddens me to hear about this sort of problem
You're right. Islam and Judaism too.
most Abrahamic religions really, they're the main one's focused on the idea of shitty small rewards and terrifying consequences for any fuckups
Not surprising, coming from the state of the KKK. The Grand Dragon lives in the neighborhood right behind mine. Fuck this state lmao
I can't help but believe religion is the reason.
Yeah no
Yeah no
thanks for your long and descriptive reasoning as to why you think that, it truly has changed my view. Religion may not be the SOLE reason but fuck me if it isn't a huge part of it.
Well let's see, I'm religious yet I don't oppose gay rights, and I know many like myself. You can't just generalize all religious people and call them detriments to society. That's detrimental to society.

If those people are against gay marriage because of their religion, then religion is to blame.

In which case we could say that religion is to blame for that too.
But then we have people who are pro rights because of their religion. In which case we could say that religion is to blame for that too.
We could, and we'd be right.

Did you notice the exact words I chose in my post? "I can't help but BELIEVE religion is the reason" because why the fuck else would this sort of thing be happening? What non-religious reasoning is there? Please provide me this

If that's how you think it works you should really re-asses your rhetorical strategy here.
God dammit my state
Can't say I'm surprised. Indiana is one of, if not the last, Christian states(you cant even buy alcohol on Sundays there). However if you read the article they only want to ban gay marriage but it looks like they're open to civil unions and the protection/benefits it brings. Basically looks like they're ok with gay marriage, just don't call it marriage.

Religious people don't get any credit for being pro-rights when religions always been playing catch up with societies progression.
Basically looks like they're ok with gay marriage, just don't call it marriage.
Well thats too bad
If iirc we passed a law a few months back that actually makes it a crime for a priest to marry a gay couple even if it's just ceremonial. Carries something like 1-3 month jail sentence for the priest... Edit: Also I had a friend interning for one of the house members who said that during the caucus session they gave a little speech on how it actually makes economic sense to do it, saying that 4 out of the 5 richest states had a similar ban in place as if the two were even remotely correlated.

If you know anything about the United States this shouldn't be surprising in the slightest.
Dude, it's Indiana. If you know anything about the United States this shouldn't be surprising in the slightest.
I guess I just have wishful thinking.
I guess I just have wishful thinking.
Hey, not a bad thing. It'll happen eventually. Bigotry is one of those things that goes away with time and education.
I really hate my home state sometimes.
But then we have people who are pro rights because of their religion. In which case we could say that religion is to blame for that too.
your religion isn't what makes you pro-gay rights if your religion is fundamentally against gay rights
