Hey FP. I have been become a member of an American organization known worldwide as People to People Student Ambassadors. The organization, founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, takes American Students and brings them to other countries in order to learn more about them and establish the true image of what most Americans are, as opposed to how we may be portayed in the country's media. Once a person is accepted, they are an official diplomatic representative of the U.S.A.
Let me make this clear, We are NOT tourists. we are there to learn about the country's government, cultures, and ways of life. I signed up for their Australia visit, a 15-day trip down the east coast through many major cities. Along the way, we will snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, talk to and learn from native Aborigines, and even meet with high up representatives of the Australian government.
For my trip, can any Australian FPers say what to expect when I get there? Things like food, weather, hotels, and general attitudes? any other FPers can give their opinions of the organization, ask questions, and other things of the like.
PS: we leave in July, and the People to People website is PeopletoPeople.com
DON'T offend the aborigines. They sue.
Well, it's a lot like North Korea. Lots of things are illegal and banned so be careful what you take or they might ban you!
Australia has the most attractive locals in the world, according to Yahoo.com.
Enjoy.

Believe me, I know. The Ambassador leaders have drilled it into our heads to be as polite as possible.
Saw thread title and instantly thought of this.

They wont treat you nice unless you act nice first because we don't really like americans here.
You're doing all the touristy stuff too.
Australia isn't some far off country with strange culture where everythings upside down and shit.
I was going to do this until I found out the cost :(

Don't expect the trains to be on time, that is if you have to travel on one.
Do you know the names of the places you're visiting?

Also, we don't know where this will happen, but we will also stay within an Australian family's home for two days.

Lol Americans coming into Australia thinking they're important because they're American.
Sorry to break this to you but i doubt you'll be meeting anyone that important. And if you do it'll be pretty brief. They've better things to do than talk to you.
I hope you aren't staying with my family.

I didn't mean it to be arrogant. We don't think we're important, and we probably won't meet someone super important. I was just pointing out that tourists don't normally meet officials, and even if they had the option, they probably wouldn't want to.

Your not being arrogant, don't apologize. I think its nice you get to go to Australia. I hope you learn alot about their culture, and some cool things about the aboriginals.

:hurr:
I did the same program 7 years ago. Also went to the U.K. a few years after that. I liked Australia more. We traveled mostly in a coach. Take advantage of your time there. Mostly you are a glorified tourist, but you definitely do some things that most people cannot do. Bring pills (or some other product) to prevent sea-sickness when you go snorkeling. I can try to answer any other questions you have

Hey, sorry to break this to you, but if it weren't for us, you'd be speaking Japanese and working in a rice paddy.
I hope all Australians aren't like you.
Tourists don't meet with high up officials of the country's government.
No, they meet the "representatives" of the officials. I.e. Tour Guides, the same people you'll be meeting.
Trains suck, trams suck, we have 7 of the top 10 deadliest animals, but we have the hottest chicks in the world.
When it comes to the reef, look with your eyes, not with your hands. Don't pick shit up off it.
Also, don't piss on the corals, they don't like that.
Have fun.
