OP updated with more relevant information not previously in the article. Not quite as bad as it seems now. Source = http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/britain-flooded-with-brand-police-to-protect-sponsors-7945436.html
Almost 300 enforcement officers will be seen across the country checking firms to ensure they are not staging "ambush marketing" or illegally associating themselves with the Games at the expense of official sponsors such as Adidas, McDonald's, Coca-Cola and BP. The clampdown goes on while 3,500 soldiers on leave are brought in to bail out the security firm G4S which admitted it could not supply the numbers of security staff it had promised. Yesterday, the Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, refused to rule out that even more soldiers may be called upon to help with security, but dismissed the issue as merely a "hitch". However, as well as the regular Army, the Olympic "brand army" will start its work with a vengeance today. Wearing purple caps and tops, the experts in trading and advertising working for the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) are heading the biggest brand protection operation staged in the UK. Under legislation specially introduced for the London Games, they have the right to enter shops and offices and bring court action with fines of up to £20,000. Olympics organisers have warned businesses that during London 2012 their advertising should not include a list of banned words, including "gold", "silver" and "bronze", "summer", "sponsors" and "London", if they give the impression of a formal connection to the Olympics. See examples of banned and allowed advertising below. [I] At the 40 Olympics venues, 800 retailers have been banned from serving chips to avoid infringing fast-food rights secured by McDonald's. This is so much bullshit, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but are these pricks seriously forcing out smaller businesses so they can continue to suck off the large companies?
This is so much bullshit, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but are these pricks seriously forcing out smaller businesses so they can continue to suck off the large companies?
Basically, yes. I don't understand how the government could let this happen - surely relaxing the laws and letting British business earn rather than letting big mostly foreign companies take a lions share makes no sense to me.
the olympics are a fucking joke
Basically, yes. I don't understand how the government could let this happen - surely relaxing the laws and letting British business earn rather than letting big mostly foreign companies take a lions share makes no sense to me.
That is a dick move.
Olympics organisers have warned businesses that during London 2012 their advertising should not include a list of banned words, including "gold", "silver" and "bronze", "summer", "sponsors" and "London".
What.
Oh, is this the famous haven of democracy and liberty, which they call the modern western world?
What if you're selling gold, silver, and bronze plaques, with "Summer Fun Beach Party, London 2012; Sponsored by local businesses"? Are they allowed to kill you?
What.
"Post-Spring sale! Get a slightly-lower-than-Platinum membership today!" Fucking hell that's like Chinese levels of censorship.
What if you're selling gold, silver, and bronze plaques, with "Summer Fun Beach Party, London 2012; Sponsored by local businesses"? Are they allowed to kill you?
"Summer Olympic fun gym party 2012 London of the Golden sports and Platinum rated styles. Bronze paper medals and popcorn for the sport people of all ages" I think that would atleast earn you an army of mercenaries, assasins, bombs, and your credit card company terminating your membership. Also the soil which your home used to be will have salt put on it so nothing will ever grow on it ever again.
What.
Good thing it's not in Vegas. "[del]Gold[/del] & [del]Silver[/del] Pawn Shop"
I remember reading somewhere they were cracking down on schools having 'Olympics' themed days, in case it brought the brand into disrepute. And here I thought the Olympics were about participation and human achievement, not a corporate orgy.
They've also banned retailers other than McDonalds from selling chips. Best of luck to you enforcing that around Hampden Park in Glasgow. Cunts.
Olympics organisers have warned businesses that during London 2012 their advertising should not include a list of banned words, including "gold", "silver" and "bronze", "summer", "sponsors" and "London".
Are you fucking serious? So what about local shops that maybe called Londons... I don't know chip shop or something who fucking knows, this is a big dick move to them.
At the 40 Olympics venues, 800 retailers have been banned from serving chips to avoid infringing fast-food rights secured by McDonald's.
this is insane!!
I love the lengths the UK is going to for all of this, it's really going to help their image for these games. (sarcasm) [editline]17th July 2012[/editline]
this is insane!!
McDonald's doesn't even call them chips, they call them fries.
Fucking corporations.
this is thatcher's fault. she's the one who suddenly decided we should privatise everything. now privatisation is such a joke not even the tories dare use that word.
fuck off olympics
This is just ridiculous. Unless the place advertises itself as a proud supporter of the Olympics even though it didn't sponsor it there shouldn't be any penalties. Simply banning words like "summer" and "London" is just sickening.
In the end, it doesn't matter what country you live in or what government you belong to, every country is big business's bitch
Hahaha this is so fuckin ridiculous... Countries spend millions for this shit just so bigger businesses can continue harvesting from the people.
big business killed me by giving me used marijuana needles
this is thatcher's fault. she's the one who suddenly decided we should privatise everything. now privatisation is such a joke not even the tories dare use that word.
it's not privatization, it's government unjustly favoring some companies over others. there's a difference. besides I don't know why you're just going LOL BLAME THATCHER FOR EVERYTHING. last I checked, restaurants and such have always been in the private sector
at the expense of official sponsors such as Adidas, McDonald's, Coca-Cola and BP
Awww poor McDonald's :( It would be such a terrible tragedy if the CEO wasn't able to buy that new yacht!
One has to imagine just how much these big names are paying for their exclusivity.
Good thing it's not in Vegas. "[del]Gold[/del] & [del]Silver[/del] Pawn Shop"
The & Pawn Shop? [editline]17th July 2012[/editline] That should be a hip club name. [editline]17th July 2012[/editline] "The Ampersand"
What.
garry's going to have to revoke ALL of our gold memberships
I thought the Olympics were focusing on people doing sports, not all this corporate bullshit.
Oh, is this the famous haven of democracy and liberty, which they call the modern western world?
Well atleast we don't have 9 year olds being sexually assualted and women being stoned.
