Hi, just joined facepunch, and my first posts gotta be about national geographic, discovery channel, syfy, universal etc etc Loads of shit has been spread worldwide about the so called '2012 apocalypse', with many different 'theories' littered all over the internet, and lately a few on the TV,about how the worlds going to end. All of these theories are presented with incorrect facts and pseudoscience. Personally I don't buy this 2012 bollocks but I know quite a few people personally, and you can see from the amount of discussion about it online, that a lot of people do believe it or are unsure about it. I think its a bit disgusting that TV channels such as Discovery, Nat Geo, Syfy, Universal have dubbed this week as 'end of the world week', (while however being slightly lenient to Syfy & Universal as they have mainly fictitious programming). Heres a quote from discoverys website about 2012
As the 21st approaches, here are a few things to keep in mind: Are you prepared to survive the apocalypse? Whether you’ve built a doomsday bunker or just need to catch up on your survival skills, there’s no time like now to prepare. And if you are looking for big ideas on how humankind could survive under apocalyptic circumstances, Discovery News has you covered, from explaining how we could pull off stunts such as deflecting near-Earth objects and colonizing Mars. The thing is, will you be ready? Perhaps more importantly, if next Friday truly is our last day on Earth, how will you spend it? Will you be stocking up on last-minute supplies? Taking it easy with your loved ones? Or heading to the center of it all at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza?
http://dsc.discovery.com/show-news/just-one-week-left-til-the-end-of-the-world.html This essentially is telling people to prepare for a 2012 doomsday lol. They fail to provide any facts or any reassurance to the public and are essentially scaremongering. National geographic follows the same lines with programmes like doomsday preppers and other programmes and adverts which I don't care to name. I think this is so wrong because there is already a huge amount of misinformation about it online, and then now these so called factual TV channels have jumped on the bandwagon, constantly drilling end of the world week into peoples heads. I wouldn't be suprised if there was a higher suicide rate or some shit on that day. because of people being misinformed. Obviously MOST people know its a load of shit. Oh well
I wouldn't say that they are really saying this is the last week of the earth, at least not seriously. Instead, they choose to present informational programs about real stuff, that is something we should think about (the end of the world isn't this friday, but I'll probably come some day), related to "the end of the world" now that it's such a trending topic. It also sounds like they're making a joke out of it.
I agree with you, but I do however feel that some people could be adversely affected by this on TV - those vulnerable to being less skeptical - children, mentally ill, elderly, etc. They may be making a joke about it, but but can't you at least see the serious side? some of these channels are supposed to have factual programming and thats what people watch it for; they believe what they learn on them channels. I've watched a few of these doomsday 'documentaries' and I can firmly say that they leave you largely feeling unsure, in speculation, focusing mainly on explaining how these fairy tale theories work in detail, but failing to provide an equal argument from a scientific point of view.
I'm calling it now that on this day some psychopath is going to go on a killing spree somewhere somehow because "Meh, life's ending anyway" I hope this doesn't happen but I have a nasty feeling it will with some of the people who live out there...
I'd honestly be scared if I was in America right now because of these 2012 nuts and how you guys have had recent shootings good luck guys
I'd love if garry banned everyone for 24 hours with the reason "Worlds ending". [editline]19th December 2012[/editline] I do not know a single person who believes that the world will end, although i sincerely hope it doesn't. Otherwise i'd never be able to find out what happens to Daryl And Merle!
