The plane in question, the F-35, is not invisible, though it is unusually small and designed to be less visible to radar than conventional aircraft. Its development, however, has proved all too visibly costly and riddled with problems. Trump first startled reporters with talk of an invisible plane in October, when he discussed the F-35 at a military briefing in hurricane-hit Puerto Rico. “Amazing job,” Trump said then. “So amazing we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the air force, especially the F-35. You like the F-35? ... You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see.”
Is he just learning about the US's stealth capabilities now? Not to say he isn't at least somewhat correct (the f35 I believe has a slightly larger radar cross section than the f22, which is already really small) but I thought the f35 development has been more or less run through the media already at this point.
To other planes it sort of is invisible though. This is just grasping at straws.
I'm surprised Themiscyra was willing to work with our government on such a project.
Donald Trump returned to a favourite subject on Thursday, telling a US coast guard audience the air force was ordering a new plane that was “almost like an invisible fighter”.
I dislike Trump too but this seems completely fine to say. If you take the last quotes out of context he sounds stupid but with this part it doesn't. Like I know he says it's "literally" invisible but people have been using that as emphasis for a while now.
Maybe if he spent less time staring at the sun he could see it?
To other planes it sort of is invisible though. This is just grasping at straws.
It very, very obviously sounds like he completely misunderstands what stealth technology is, and thinks the F-35 is invisible to the human eye. But because he leaves the statement open-ended enough that he *might* have meant "You can't see it. You literally can't see it [through radar]", I guess anyone laughing at the obvious should be chastised for grasping at straws?
You literally can’t see it.
[editline]23rd November 2017[/editline]
I dislike Trump too but this seems completely fine to say. Is it that hard to accept stupid people say stupid shit? Even the quote you posted doesn't save anything, nowhere in the quote does it say he meant radar visible.
This is like a bias test, if you think Trump is a stupid orange man you're gonna be like "haha what a dumbo doesn't know Stealth Tech" but if you're a person you're gonna be like "yeah I mean that's kinda what stealth fighters are"

[editline]23rd November 2017[/editline] However, no matter if Trump understands what 'stealth' means or not, I have a more important question: Why the hell is he bragging about it to the coast guard and apparently the Puerto Rico relief effort? It's the Air Force and Marines thing. Hyping it up in front of the coast guard is like standing in some random county in Minnesota and hyping the LAPD's new interceptors.
I'm glad Trump's there to inform the people of the fucking coastguard about a fighter jet that has been in production for years now, and they are almost certainly already aware of. Such intellect; one of the highest IQ's EVER!
To other planes it sort of is invisible though. This is just grasping at straws.
technically correct is the best sort of correct
for anyone going "yeah but clearly he meant" - trump lost that line of argumentation somewhere along all the other stupid shit he did it's never clear what he actually means, because him believing the F35 was completely invisible would actually be one of the less stupid things he's said

I kinda want someone to put a bunch of pictures of US fighters in front of him and see if he could identify an f-35 [editline]23rd November 2017[/editline] obviously they haven't shown him the amazing stealth capabilities of the f-117 [t]https://deanoinamerica.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/stealth-fighter-joke.jpg[/t] [t]https://i-kinja--img-com.cdn.ampproject.org/ii/w1200/s/i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--ZF90WCyy--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/u6v5sjxqopfuy9hyqgwe.jpg[/t] https://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/the-f-117-stealth-fighter-program-actually-had-a-klingo-1759842067
I kinda want someone to put a bunch of pictures of US fighters in front of him and see if he could identify an f-35
TBH I wouldn't really blame him for not being able to. I mean, sure, here on Facepunch, we're all a bunch of fat achtually'ing nerds who get into big dumb arguments over nothing, but I don't see why it's particularly important for the president to be able to visually distinguish a F-22 from a F-35.
i'm pretty sure he couldn't tell the difference between an f-35 and an f-14 or even an f-4. he legitimately does not care to learn a thing about what he talks about just as long as he's winning
But why does this matter, though? I'd say a good 80% of people can't. It's a fighter jet*, it's fighter-jet-shaped, that's about as far as it goes, and there's nothing really wrong with that. I know very well that he's a complete moron, but calling him a moron for hypothetically lacking some pretty niché knowledge when there's so much shit that matters so much more to his function is dumb and only adds to the 'lol trump is stupid, he can't even...' pile of nonsense. *Yes I know it's a strike aircraft shut up, these 80% can't tell the distinction between plane classes either, and that's okay too
If nothing else, touting the stealth capabilities of the F-35 is stupid simply because IT ISN'T PARTICULARLY GOOD AT IT. The F-35 is built for export and lacks most of the top tier stealth tech that the US has worked on for decades. That stealth tech goes into the F-22. The F-22 is ridiculously difficult to detect. The primary draw of the F-35 is it's electronics package. He is pushing a feature that we intentionally cripple so we can sell the plane. Why? Because he is a stupid piece of shit. He isnt, in any sense of the word, "correct".

He speaks like ogres or trolls in videogames/fantasy what the fuck is this "You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see". Replace the plane with "elf" and you're set. Like I'm pretty sure he meant "on radar" but it comes as no surprise when you speak in this moronic fashion that your message isn't clear. That's not an excuse either way.
Because he's the president and should be aware of what his military has
And as we all know, efficient leadership is based 85% on being able to visually distinguish fairly similar pieces of equipment apart; which Trump clearly hypothetically might possibly not be able to do.
If we are going to drag pundits and politicians over the coals for not being knowledgeable about guns I don't see why people can't make fun of a president saying you "literally can't see" a stealth fighter [editline]23rd November 2017[/editline]
Because he's the president and should be aware of what his military has
I can understand why a President doesn't have knowledge about every piece of equipment in the military but given how much Trump has talked about it you'd figure he would know the F-35 isn't literally invisible
And as we all know, efficient leadership is based 85% on being able to visually distinguish fairly similar pieces of equipment apart; which Trump clearly hypothetically might possibly not be able to do.
Not knowing the specifics of every piece of equipment in the military is fine, but he's been extremely focused on the f-35, constantly touting how he saved the program money by buying more, even as those discounts were already built into the program from the start. Its just that, the more trump tends to talk about something, the less and less he actually seems to know about it, like his beautiful healthcare bill that gave everybody coverage, or his grand tax bill that's going to lower everybody's taxes, or the money he saved on the new airforce-one by cutting features such as mid air refuling which congress is considering countermanding because its a very important feature for the survivability of the aircraft.
It's biased to take Trumps words literally but its unbiased to impose meaning upon them to make him seem smarter
But sniping every single comment Trump makes does not contribute anything to anybody. This story isn't newsworthy.
someone please show him this plane https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YF-23 and tell him it's the best and to manufacture 1000 of those !
Going to hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico to tell them how you'll be spending hundreds of millions on Air Force jets. How Trumplike.
