But even as Bale begins preparing for another round of crime-fighting action as the Caped Crusader, it's worth wondering what brought the actor to the franchise in the first place — you know, besides having the opportunity to play one of the coolest comic book characters of all time. In an extensive and incredibly candid interview with Esquire Magazine, Bale spoke about the reasons he initially signed on for "Batman Begins," saying that it wasn't an easy decision for him. "All I knew was that there was a whole lot more there that I'd never seen and there was some extreme in the interpretation that should be taken," said the actor. "So I just said, 'I just gotta hope that they're gonna go with that, and if they don't, that's not the version I'd like to be involved with anyway.'" "And it's that perverse thing in life, where when you're able to achieve a certain recklessness, you actually end up getting good results," Bale continued. "You have to throw everything aside and say, 'What the hell, I'm gonna do it this way, and if they don't like it, I wanna do it anyway.' It avoids that anxiety of 'How do I manipulate this and fake it so that people believe me?' That's never gonna work. So that's the kind of abandonment you gotta have."[/quote]
