A spot inspection of civil service offices by Dubai's ruler resulted in embarrassing footage of Sheikh Mohammed standing awkwardly by empty desks which should have been occupied by high-ranking officials.
If there ever was a day not to turn up late for work, it was Sunday morning in Dubai where Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid carried out an early morning inspection of several civil service departments, the Gulf News newspaper reports. Sunday is a normal working day in the Emirate, and Gulf News said that the Sheikh began his surprise tour at 7.30am, expecting to see senior officials already working at their desks. But as video posted to Twitter by the government's media office shows, the Dubai ruler is the only person present, save for his own framed portrait on the wall.
Nine senior officials from the Dubai Municipality have been ordered to retire as a result of the sheikh's visit, the Khaleej Times reported.
how much of a difference is there between an ordered retirement and getting fired, practically speaking?

Wording.
7:30 am on a Sunday... tyranny.

If you were fired from the job, it would be really hard to sell your work experience from that job to future employers. But if you were instead given the option to resign yourself, all that you would need to tell future employers is 'oh I resigned from that job'. Sounds better than 'oh I was fired'. (Assuming those employers don't look into it too much and discover that you were technically fired).
Similar thing happened at my workplace. One of the managers was caught stealing shit from other employees, so he was given the choice of either resigning, or being fired. He of course resigned.

Sunday is a normal working day in Dubai. And I assume that their working day is supposed to start earlier in the morning, too.

benefit and/or contract payout, if any

7:30 is fuckoff early tho, i'm guessing it (in part) probably has to do with the heat later in the day

Saving face essentially
7:30 isn't that early for a job no clue what you guys are talking about.

I'm guessing they start their days a couple hours earlier than we might just to deal with environmental issues

For an office job, it's fairly early.
I worked in film and a regular start time was midnight, 2 am, or even 6 am as well as more regular hours. I've worked in factories that start at 7 am, but office jobs? They rarely start that early.

This really sucks for future employers who might inadvertently hire a thief. Anyone who steals from co-workers doesn't deserve a job.
Thankfully there is little chance of him successfully using them as a reference.

Western (or at least American) office jobs are typically 9 to 5, so it's a bit early in comparison to that.

Hour and a half later than my normal clock-in time, and 2.5 earlier than my current clock-in time. It's not unreasonable to expect someone to be there by 730.

Weekends in the Middle East are Friday-Saturday.
Is this Dubai's Steve Job?

Think 0730 is bad? Try 0500
I mean if we're just going to start comparing god awful start times, I don't think that's really the point of the news story
but I used to wake up at 2 am for a 3:30 am call time for the better part of a December.

Good God, fuck that. I've done the 0200 wake-up a couple of times, it fucking blows.

almost certainly, it would make perfect sense to work 7:30 to mid day like 1 and call it quits because of the heat
I'm guessing he wouldn't have been nearly as angry if any had showed up at all.

Mondays are effectively sundays in the middle east, it's also why middle eastern places near you most likely are closed on mondays.
The thread title is incorrect btw. Only the bosses were fired
Ms Al-Marri went on to say: "Timeliness starts at the top, and we won't go after the employees when their bosses aren't there."
I woke up at 4am for 8 months straight working as a lifeguard. Can't say I recommend it

Reminds me of merchant ships.
If you're a seaman and you're on duty, whatever hour you get to land, is the hour you have to get up for docking procedures. Blows so hard.
