One hundred boxes of comics were seized from Aaron and Alfonzo Castro, indicted with 39 others in the takedown of an alleged Denver meth ring. “What we are talking about is money laundering – a means to have something of value that can easily be converted to cash but keeps you from having stashes of cash around,” Colorado Attorney General John Sutters said at a press conference on Monday. Adams County District Attorney Don Quick went further in his explanation. “It appeared they were working on a start-up company for high-end comic books,” he said, according to CNN. He said the comics included “first edition” Superman and Batman titles, and that some of the comics were in plastic bags. One comic was worth $3500 and the total collection over $500,000, according to the report. The ring allegedly brought methamphetamine manufactured in Mexico to Denver from Phoenix, then delivered to local dealers
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/15704.html [h=6]"and that some of the comics were in plastic bags"!!!!! WOW!! They HAD to be worth money if they were still in the plastic bags!![/h]
holy fucking jesus
collectors items of any type fetch ridiculous prices, mainly because it's an auction/bartering system.

So it's illegal to own something that can easily be converted to cash?
So it's illegal to own something that can easily be converted to cash?
THEY WERE TAINTED WITH DRUGS.
So it's illegal to own something that can easily be converted to cash?
Its illegal to buy, sell drugs and launder money. The comics were bought with drug money, they essentially ARE the drug money. *EDIT* Trading 1st Ed Batman comic for 2 grams of meth.
Whilst I understand this is obviously a case of money laundering, what if they were actually just hardcore collectors who enjoy the occasional hit of meth and realised that selling meth was a really easy way to get money to complete their collection?
THEY WERE TAINTED WITH DRUGS.
Except in this case the comics likely, literally were. Meth tends to permeate the surrounding environment around a drug lab, making the whole area toxic and a health hazard. It's possible that they've been ruined as a result and would have to be destroyed.
I'll bet that they took them and destroyed them
