Aaron Alexis, the man police say killed 12 people Monday at the Washington Navy Yard, went to a gun store and shooting range in suburban Northern Virginia two days before the attack, an attorney for the shop has told NPR.
NPR's Joseph Shapiro reported that The Sharpshooters Range in Lorton, Va., ran Alexis' name through the FBI and state of Virginia background check system. Alexis was approved and he purchased a Remington 870 shotgun and about 24 shells, Joe says.
Also Tuesday, The Washington Post and other news outlets reported that investigators believe Alexis carried the disassembled shotgun in a backpack as he entered the Navy Yard's Building 197 — then stopped in a men's room to put the gun together.
...so? Why's it matter when he bought it?
...so? Why's it matter when he bought it?
From what I heard he had a criminal background.
He should not have been able to buy one imo

So, it doesn't matter when he bought it, just that he bought it?
If he has a criminal background, would it matter if he bought it two days ago vs last week, or the month before?

4473 covers that.

If you have a criminal background, and file a ATF Form 4473 to purchase a weapon, you'll usually be turned away* and disallowed from purchasing a gun.
* Unless the NCIS, FBI, ATF, and otherwise go braindead for a few hours, or some shop keeper is bribed.

It's trying to spark a gun debate.
...so? Why's it matter when he bought it?
I'm pretty sure people are pissed because it highlights how easy it is for someone to acquire a gun and go on a rampage at a whim, given the short amount of time.
I've no strong opinion on it but it does irk me a bit.

Waiting periods
What happened to the Brady law?
3 days and all that

Freedom
There are laws and background checks already in place to prevent this sort of thing, so someone fucked up at some point.
The shopkeeper should at least be taken in for some questions, and various gov't employees should get a stern talking to.
He passed both the VA and FBI background checks. Literally no reason for him to be turned away after he passed both a state and federal background.
Sure he might be a little whack, but guess what, thats what the whole expanded background checks were going to fix but that got killed in the house/senate.. so really, blame your government for allowing a man who was possibly mentally ill to buy a gun -- with passing both backgrounds.
The only thing fucked up here is the lack of a flag on his background.
Okay? Does it make it any difference than if he owned it for 5 years?

Not sure. Couple weeks ago I bought a Mosin-Nagant in a gun store. They did a background check right there on the spot, took my money, and I walked out with a nice soviet rifle and 60rds for it. Whole process took about 15 minutes, and as far as I know the gun is legally registered to me.
I was genuinely surprised at how easy it was. 'Course I'm not mentally ill and I've never been arrested for anything so I would have passed anyway, but still. Of course different states have different laws, and I live in Tennessee. They're pretty lax. If you've got a valid TN ID and pass the instant background check you can buy a pistol, rifle, shotgun, pretty much anything that isn't Title II restricted.

Indeed, and he had already been on record seeking help for some pretty severe mental illnesses that would disqualify him from buying a gun. He also had a bit of a drinking habit...not to mention being arrested for taking potshots at a van in 2004. But apparently that was only a misdemeanor.
It's a crying shame he wasn't able to get the help he so desperately needed. This shooting would never have happened had he been able to get the mental help he wanted and needed.

What universe do you live in? Waiting periods are only a thing for "gun stores" and christ, I can walk into a Cabella's with $700 cash and walk out with a carbine. The only waiting I'd have to do would be for the background check, which takes minutes.
This isn't even beginning to talk about FFL holders who don't even need to do the check.
You can't smack this Alexis.
gasp he killed 12 people without an assault weapon. impossible!
it's almost as if the type of weapon used really doesn't fucking matter

He also used an AR-15 if the reports are correct. But you're correct in saying that the weapons doesn't matter.

HIS WEAPONS
What we know: Federal law enforcement sources say authorities have recovered three weapons from the scene of the mass shooting, including one -- a shotgun -- that investigators believe he brought in to the compound. The other two weapons -- handguns -- the sources say, may have been taken from guards.
What we don't know: The sources, who have detailed knowledge of the investigation, cautioned that initial investigation information that an AR-15 rifle was used may have been incorrect. It is believed that Alexis had rented an AR-15, but returned it before Monday morning's shootings.
On Sunday, Alexis purchased a Remington 870 shotgun and a small amount of ammunition at Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in northern Virginia, the store's attorney, J. Michael Slocum, said. Alexis spent "a couple hours" there, including at its practice range, the lawyer added. In according with federal law, Alexis name and other applicable information was provided to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and he was approved to purchase the gun, according to Slocum.
Alexis had the proper credentials to get into the Navy Yard, said Washington's mayor. But Gray added that it was unclear how he got the shotgun past security.
Parlave, from the FBI, said Tuesday that Alexis may have gotten hold of the handguns after he got into the military facility.
Cabella's has a 30 day waiting period policy on all firearms iirc.

not unless they've changed it recently.
not long ago i went in and bought a couple pistols and left with them in a matter of a couple hours.
glad they dont though 30 days would be an asinine amount of time.
