My friends non-fatally shot a man several dozen times, and everybody had a big laugh.

Except the guy who was shot. He didn't laugh much at all.
There are two types of soldiers in an occupational training environment: IET's and MOS-T's. IET's, or initial entry training, are soldiers who have completed basic training, and are now receiving occupational training for their first specialty. MOS-T's, or military occupational specialty transfers, are soldiers who have already completed training for one occupational specialty, and are now receiving additional training in a new field. Most MOS-T's have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan at least once.
The final chapter for most occupational training is a stint in the field, anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, living out of tents and undergoing combat training. This is called FTX, which I can only assume stands for Field Training X-TREME. During FTX, IET soldiers are usually pitted against the far more experienced MOS-T soldiers, as a sort of "trial by fire" to jam in some combat experience before they go to their units and deploy. The gear used during FTX probably changes from unit to unit, but the training equipment my unit uses is incredibly high powered, military-grade paintball weaponry--which hurt like a bitch but cause no real damage.
Our training grounds are about five miles from the Mexican border.
Not long ago, one of the graduating classes was undergoing FTX. It had been a long couple of days, with the MOS-T's regularly performing night assaults on the hapless IET soldiers. The MOS-T's were equipped with far better equipment. Among that equipment was night vision goggles, but of an older generation. They did their job, but were only good for getting a basic idea of your surroundings.
One night, the MOS-T's were forming up to do yet another late night raid on the IET's operating base, mostly just because they thought it was really funny to wake everybody up by shooting them, but also because it's a valuable training experience to be woken up by getting shot. But something went a little bit wrong at this point. It was dead night, pitch black, and all of these hardened veterans were in full camouflage and packing military grade paintball training weapons. Through his night vision goggles, one of the soldiers saw somebody by himself, trying to sneak through the brush. He quietly informed the others, and they set up an ambush, assuming it was a lone IET soldier.
When the person walked into their trap, nearly twenty soldiers revealed themselves and began firing repeatedly at the lone man. He dropped almost immediately, screaming and covering himself. The MOS-T's decided to teach this supposed IET soldier why he should never go anywhere alone in a combat zone by continuing to shoot him for several seconds. After they finished firing their barrage of high powered training rounds into the poor guy, who was now curled into a fetal position, they cut fire and went over to make sure he was okay, laughing and joking as they walked over to him.
Whoops. Not an IET soldier. In fact, he didn't speak a word of English. Shortly afterward, border patrol arrived and announced that they'd been tracking this guy all night. Twenty veteran soldiers had jumped out of the bush and fired over fifty high velocity paintball rounds into an illegal immigrant, who was unknowingly trying to cross the border through the military training grounds of the home of aerial surveillance.
He was perfectly fine, other than some rather colorful bruises and a very embarrassing story for his cell-mate.
Oh wow. This has got to be the best immigration related story I have heard in an age.
Silly Mexicans :P
Haha, what a story to tell to his mexican friends.
Holy shit hahahaha
just like roosevelt all over again.
Shit luck

So would you have preferred him to have been shot fatally?
Jesus. -snip-
You idiot. This guy was not only trying to illegally cross the border, he was trespassing on military ground and you're saying you're losing faith in America (the entire continent?!) because some soldiers who were doing a training exercise mistook him for a newbie who needed to be hazed?
He got shot with a few paintballs. Get over it.

Why? It was in a cordoned off area where active military training was underway. The only people who were supposed to be out there, in an area bordered by signs with such colorful captions as "DO NOT ENTER: Military Training Zone, yada yada, Trespassers will be shot, etc, etc," were the soldiers undergoing their training. It was an honest mistake. It was a mistake that everybody found to be pretty funny, but a mistake nonetheless.
It's not like they posted up and said, "Let's shoot us some taco-benders boys!" through snide grins. What they probably actually said was, "Let's shoot us this IET soldier boys!" But to be fair, they were probably grinning snidely when they said that.
Wonder if there going to show this on border patrol tonight.

If it's fox doing the reporting it'd probably come out as immigrants doing the shooting or something silly like that.
Big Dumb American threads are best threads.

Border patrol has gotten quite militant.
Woah, ninja'd multiple times.
So not only did he get caught crossing the border, but he also got one hell of a bruising at the same time.
Karma's a bitch.
