The White House turned to mockery as top GOP leaders expressed buyer's remorse and vowed to fix the bill. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell both said the measure, the only law enacted over Obama's veto in his eight years as president, needed repairs. McConnell said the law may have "unintended ramifications," while Ryan said "there may be some work to be done" to make sure it doesn't lead to U.S. service members overseas being sued. "Everybody was aware of who the potential beneficiaries were but nobody really had focused on the downside in terms of our international relationships," McConnell told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference. ... That earned McConnell and others a scathing response from the White House, which said lawmakers didn't know what they were voting for. "What's true in elementary school is true in the United States Congress: Ignorance is not an excuse," said spokesman Josh Earnest.
How could no one speak out about this until now? A child could have seen not only the foreign relation ramifications, but the legal ones as well. Overriding the president's veto should be for something that Congress is absolutely sure will benefit the country; they had plenty of time to think of the possible outcomes.
Fucking wow. You overrode the Presidential veto to force something through, Congress. Then you actually sat down to think about what it meant. Holy shit. Is the government still on the verge of shutting down? Or did Congress fix that? Because if Congress didn't but pushed this through, I need to go get so drunk I don't remember who I am.
Pretty shitty how the saudis are blackmailing the US to make sure this bill won't pass Yeah like killing Yemen civilians with white phospor!
There's a fucking damn good reason why this bill should not pass -- the US judiciary is not an appropriate mechanism for international justice. It's retarded. Something should be done, but this isn't it.
Pretty shitty how the saudis are blackmailing the US to make sure this bill won't passYeah like killing Yemen civilians with white phospor!
cool, but the bill is also retarded for a billion other reasons

Why are our politicians so fucking stupid.
Why are our politicians so fucking stupid.
Because our president is a black Democrat. The majority of the Republicans in Congress just oppose all of his bills and suggestions to spite him. It's fucking childish and unprofessional.
Because our president is a black Democrat. The majority of the Republicans in Congress just oppose all of his bills and suggestions to spite him. It's fucking childish and unprofessional.
Both houses voted overwhelmingly to override the veto, the Senate was almost unanimous, so there were a lot of Democrats in on this too
I don't think race has anything to do with it
did you miss the thing about them questioning if Obama was really american because he's of african descent
I don't think race has anything to do with it
y'know, the whole birth certificate thing and all the jokes obama made afterwards at the expense of the republicans

I have never seen a decision-making body as useless as the US congress. Hell, they transcend uselessness and become an actual hindrance to the country more often than not. Could've sworn Matt Groening made a joke about this in Simpsons once. [editline]29th September 2016[/editline]
That's why you should vote for trump.
Exactly. Since you're currently never sure whether the US government is screwing the country over, vote for a candidate who you're sure will fuck the country so badly, it may never recover. Flawless logic as ever from ultra_bright.

Lets assume that the democrats had voted against the veto and stuck by Obama. In that case, many of the democrats who are running would have voted against compensating 9/11 victims and families in favor of protecting dubious foreign powers. The attack adds practically write themselves, and now the republicans can take more seats in congress. Keep in mind there is a lot to lose on this election. If trump loses and Hillary is elected, then Hillary would appoint a liberal justice, and the liberals would dominate the Executive and Judicial branches. The republicans therefore NEED to hold onto Congress if they want to stay relevant. Honestly this election is a perfect storm for a major swing in either direction, whatever party comes out on top has a good chance of holding the Presidency along with majorities in both Congress and the Supreme Court. It just seems the republican's game of chicken backfired and now they are doing damage control.
Why are our politicians so fucking stupid.
Because we allow them to be.
Both houses voted overwhelmingly to override the veto, the Senate was almost unanimous, so there were a lot of Democrats in on this too
Yeah this was a huge fuck up on both Republicans and Democrat parts.
doing everything i can to vote this old turtle out of power atm
I'd be happy to never see his face again Oh hell maybe just once more Look at that charmer
Both houses voted overwhelmingly to override the veto, the Senate was almost unanimous, so there were a lot of Democrats in on this too
Eh, my postvwas really more of a general statement. I'm gonna admit, I really only know the basics about this bill. But I feel like no matter what Obama would have chose to do with the bill, most of congress would have tried to push it back anyways.
Because we allow them to be.
Almost as if being hugely cynical society is a terrible thing.
That's why you should vote for trump.
sorry how does voting in a president that has shown himself to be completely incompetent at foreign policy solve the problem of congress being incompetent at foreign policy if trump was president it probably wouldn't have even been vetoed to begin with
Because our president is a black Democrat. The majority of the Republicans in Congress just oppose all of his bills and suggestions to spite him. It's fucking childish and unprofessional.
It doesn't help that both sides are turning into parodies of themselves.
Pretty shitty how the saudis are blackmailing the US to make sure this bill won't passYeah like killing Yemen civilians with white phospor!
*allegedly* anyway, since when did the US become the world police again? leave it to the united nations or something not the fucking US congress who OVERRODE THE PRESIDENTS VETO, WHO IS THE FACE OF US FOREIGN AFFAIRS.
Fucking wow. You overrode the Presidential veto to force something through, Congress. Then you actually sat down to think about what it meant. Holy shit.
This feels like something out of blackadder, what the fuck man
doing everything i can to vote this old turtle out of power atm
Good luck, our state is almost hopelessly gerrymandered.
