What do I do I have no money, or instrumental skill, it's an Estebans Grenada, You guys know of any good free tutorials?
Why on earth would you buy any musical instrument without having a moderate knowledge of how to read music, play chords, etc.
Why on earth would you buy any musical instrument without having a moderate knowledge of how to read music, play chords, etc.
...To learn?
...To learn?
Well I guess I better buy a car before I learn to drive one.
Well I guess I better buy a car before I learn to drive one.
why not
Well I guess I better buy a car before I learn to drive one.
I bought my first bass guitar knowing nothing of musical knowledge. I'd say I'm a decent bass player today, and I didn't even take lessons.

Ask a friend who plays guitar, or if they know someone who plays guitar if they can teach you basic chords. Get a job to get some money so you can pay for a few professional lessons. After 2 years of playing I still don't know how to read sheet music, but I consider myself a decent musician.
I bought my first bass guitar knowing nothing of musical knowledge. I'd say I'm a decent bass player today, and I didn't even take lessons.
But think about how much faster you could of learned if you bought a book or hell, even a DVD of some sort with the bass guitar.
Yeah, I forgot how learning to play an instrument means you can only play instruments that you bought after you learned how.
But think about how much faster you could of learned if you bought a book or hell, even a DVD of some sort with the bass guitar.
that's not necessarily true
But think about how much faster you could of learned if you bought a book or hell, even a DVD of some sort with the bass guitar.
Yeah I might've learned some stuff faster with a book, but it's just as likely that the lessons would've discouraged me from playing overall. And just like Eluveitie said, many quite successful musicians started with their first instrument at almost zero musical knowledge. Jeff Loomis for one, is a completely self taught guitarist, he got guitar at about 10 years old and 5 years later just got interest in it, and without any prior knowledge just started learning it. [editline]20th May 2011[/editline] It especially makes sense when it's a guitar, because if you just don't feel like learning it now, it doesn't take too much space so it can be lying around until you may sometime want to learn it.
I got my first instrument with no prior musical knowledge and what do you know I've been playing for a decade
Why on earth would you buy any musical instrument without having a moderate knowledge of how to read music, play chords, etc.
wait what how the fuck do you learn an instrument before you actually buy it? :v:
air guitar
First of all I'd suggest checking out all possibilities of getting a guitar teacher (not classes where more people are lectured simultaneously). A guitar teacher will guide you on how to play, give advice on what to do next and so on, and will make everything a lot easier for you. However, you don't need to have a guitar teacher, but I'd suggest you get one if it's possible.
Why on earth would you buy any musical instrument without having a moderate knowledge of how to read music, play chords, etc.
It was a gift smartass.
i have been playing the guitar for nearly 6 years and i still cant read music and don't consider it inessential. i can read tablature just fine and that's all i need . also for the record i brought my car before i learnt to drive to speed up the learning process, pasalaqcua posted one of the dumbest comments i have seen in a long time.
tune it to FAGDAD
Guitar Hero! It's just like the real thing!
Yup it's true I bought guitar hero and now I am a guitar master!
I did exactly the same thing as you, I bought an acoustic guitar without any knowledge of playing, and today I can play a few songs, I know most major chords and I have fun playing. Good hobby to do when you're bored, or if you're even serious about getting really good and into a band and whatnot. Here are a few sites I use: www.chordbook.com - This site gives you all chords, and has a guitar tuner too. www.ultimate-guitar.com - Everyone who plays guitar must know about this site, it uses guitar tabs or chords if you prefer to read chords than tabs. And a great helper when learning songs.
I wrote a long post, but I decided you should just watch this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-426895774002032686# It's ancient, but God I wish I had seen when I first started. Some of the advice is slightly dated. I really don't agree with the maintenance side either, guitars are very finicky. Most of the first half is gear related, but it's really important to learn. Edit: Oh, you got an acoustic. Never mind..
it's acoustic/electric with an amp, does this matter??
learn how to read tabs, you should be right
it's acoustic/electric with an amp, does this matter??
What kind of music do you want to play?
Why on earth would you buy any musical instrument without having a moderate knowledge of how to read music, play chords, etc.
I can't tell if this is a serious comment or not...
Okay, by experience, I'd say that you should learn some basic picking mechanics and some flexibility going on both hands before you go playing any song. You don't wanna be one of those douchebags that think they're hot shit because they can play Master Of Puppets while downpicking all the time. First off, practice alternative picking. Get it done right, second, get used to playing some chords. If you wanna play rock music, then go ahead and learn the power chord straight ahead so you can have some fun right away, otherwise, I suggest you learn all major chords. From there, I'd say you learn pentatonic minor scale or, if you really are dedicated, the major and minor scale modes. As for how to actually learn all that stuff, try Google. If you don't really like self-teaching, get an actual teacher, you'll learn MUCH faster.
What kind of music do you want to play?
Just some average acoustic or rock stuff, stuff I can entertain ladies with like coldplay or jason mraz.

That's the basic outline yeah, but I am really interested in getting good.
