Car dealer Brad Benson made the offer in one of his dealership's quirky radio ads, which focus more on current events than cars. But he was surprised when a representative for Jones called to collect the 2011 Hyundai Accent, which retails for $14,200. "They said unless I was doing false advertising, they would like to arrange to pick up the car," Benson recalled. At first he thought it was a hoax, so Benson asked Jones to send in a copy of his driver's license. He did. Jones, of Gainesville, Fla., never burned a Quran but told The Associated Press on Thursday that the offer of a car was not the reason, saying he learned about the offer a few weeks after Sept. 11. He said he plans to donate the car to an organization that helps abused Muslim women. "We are not trying to profit from this. We are not keeping the car for ourselves," Jones said by telephone from California, where he was taping television appearances. The pastor will have to pick up the car at Brad Benson Mitsubishi Hyundai in South Brunswick so he can fill out paperwork. No date has been set for the handover. Jones had threatened to burn the Muslim holy book on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks over plans to build an Islamic center and mosque near where terrorists brought down the World Trade Center nine years ago. Muslims revere the book as the word of God and view its destruction as sacrilege. His plans drew opposition across the world. President Barack Obama appealed to him on television, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates called him personally. Gen. David Petraeus, head of the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, said carrying out the plan would have endangered American troops. Benson, a former New York Giants center, said he originally offered Jones use of a car for a year if he refused to burn a Quran ever. "I just didn't think that was a good thing for our country right now," Benson said. He's now giving Jones the car outright because he doesn't want to be connected to whatever the Florida pastor does with it. "I don't want to be involved in the politics of that," Benson said. Before he made his decision, Benson asked listeners to weigh in on whether he should honor his promise. More than 2,600 people responded by phone and e-mail, and the vast majority, Benson said, urged him to keep his word. One caller suggested painting sayings from various religious books — the Quran, the Talmud, the King James Bible — on the car. "What you didn't say was what the car was going to look like when you gave it to him," the caller said. Another caller told Benson to "be a man" and keep his promise. And some encouraged Benson to pick his own charity to get a car. In 2003, Benson offered another newsmaker — Saddam Hussein — a new car if he fled Iraq. That commercial wasn't as successful, and Benson pulled the ad after two days, replacing it with one apologizing for any offense that was taken. The Quran commercial was part of a regular "idiot award" segment Benson has singled out others for, including Lindsey Lohan, Mel Gibson and Roger Clemens. "We don't have your typical car commercial," Benson said. But they are memorable — and effective. Three years ago, he was selling 60 cars a month, he said. Today, that number is between 500 and 600 — making him one of the state's most successful dealers.
Should of done
One caller suggested painting sayings from various religious books — the Quran, the Talmud, the King James Bible — on the car.
that to that old greedy shit.
Fucking cunt. Why should he get a new car?
Should of
Also, at least he got a new car; although since he never had any intention of actually burning the Qurans, it seems like kind of a waste.
Was it ever mentioned that the car needs functioning brake lines
if he's giving it to charity, one for Muslim women especially. I see nothing wrong. Did you guys read that, or are you just hating on the guy? I don't like him much either, but still.
Maybe the new car can only be powered by burning bibles in the tank

Okay pastor, take your pick:
I missed that part, I wouldn't take his word for it however.
I'd have a hard time believing that especially when he called the Quran burning off. Much as you dislike him, he still has some good intentions even though many of them are very distorted. I'm sure he'll do it, he already caved in under pressure before.

(This was before he officially "canceled-canceled" it.)
Why is he rewarding this kind of thought??
Cock sucker. Shit dude, Christians are some of the most backwards-assed hypocrites I've ever seen
He lied before saying the Imam agreed to move the Mosque, therefore he will cancel it. (This was before he officially "canceled-canceled" it.)
well, he still "canceled-canceled" it. If this goes through, more good will be done than harm. I really doubt he's going keep it when the spotlight is under him.
We should burn the car
Oh hey my dad got his car from there! He signed my football for me :D
this guy has the best car commercials ever
I love hearing this guy's commercials. He puts out a new one like every two weeks. They're some of the best radio advertisements.
So the moral of the story is being a bastard gives you a free car
I would not burn a Koran for a car. [editline]15th October 2010[/editline] hell I would burn one for a car
He said he plans to donate the car to an organization that helps abused Muslim women.
For the idiots who only read thread titles.
Cock sucker. Shit dude, Christians are some of the most backwards-assed hypocrites I've ever seen
It says it 4 or 5 lines down that he's going to donate the car to a muslim charity...learn how to read and stop being intolerant to billions of people's religion just because of one person.
its obvious the only reason he said he'd donate it to a charity for abused muslim women is just a "subtle" insult aimed at islam
It says it 4 or 5 lines down that he's going to donate the car to a muslim charity...learn how to read and stop being intolerant to billions of people's religion just because of one person.
I don't think that "billions" proper, there's about 1.5 billion people who practice the fundamentals of Islam around the world, and about 60% of those are in West Asia. It is the 2nd largest religion in the world, but in all actuality it isn't really all that big, comparing it to the number of Christians at least.
So the moral of the story is being a bastard gives you a free car
No, threatening to unleash your inner asshole does.
Ah, advertisement.
I guess a car is more important to him than not building an islamic center in NYC. BS, he doesn't give a fuck about the families he preached about, he is just a bigot.
