Rep Wants State Dinners to Abide by School Cafeteria Calorie Caps
As the federal government sets strict guidelines for school lunches, one lawmaker is trying to make sure the White House lives by the same rules -- even if it means taking all the fun out of state dinners like the one being held Tuesday night.
Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., is pushing a bill that would require meals served at White House state dinners and other functions to abide by the same calorie restrictions as those served to America’s school kids. Though the bill may stand little chance of passage, he describes it as a message that if the government wants to dictate what children can eat, they should lead by example.
“Back home our school districts and students are frustrated and feel like their government is not listening,” Davis, R-Ill., said.
For sure, Tuesday night's state dinner in honor of French President Francois Hollande would not meet the guidelines. It wouldn't even come close.
The dinner boasts a number of high-fat, high-calorie foods which would be purged from school cafeteria trays, including a rib-eye steak with blue cheese that packs close to 1,000 calories alone. If a guest were to eat all four courses of the meal, according to one estimate, they would consume 2,500 calories and 152 grams of fat --- not counting alcohol.

Illinois politics is generally very crooked and I don't agree with republican ideology but this is a law I can get behind.

No objections here, even if it isn't all that likely to go through.
I get the point but I think it's a little silly. School lunches are supposed to be nutritional, state dinners have a whole other function, like reducing friction between state heads and showing respect toward the guests.
Edit
Here I assume "state dinners" is referring to the kind of dinners that are arranged when other national leaders come to visit btw
When Obama got elected, some funky ass bill was passed (not sure if federal) that banned regular soda in school vending machines so we were forced to drink diet soda which is fucking worse for you. A lot of kids suddenly got interested in politics because it affected them.
Well I mean i'm all for anything that likens government representatives to school children

Nutritional but soggy and tasteless school lunches are no fun.

That's a positive development, even if the circumstances weren't that great
I dunno about you, but when I was in highschool I'm pretty sure the plastic trays had more nutrition than the garbage they fed us for lunch. Not to mention they were tiny as all hell, it was nowhere near enough food if you had sports or anything after school.
That's because schools assume everyone is the same cookie cutter and that everything they will do will work for everyone equally unless they're required by law to do otherwise.

So basically communism
I'm so happy I'm out of school and able to eat whatever the hell I want, whenever the hell I want.

In what ways are diet sodas bad for you? I would like to know what makes them worse over regular sodas.

what
I like this, make them eat the exact same food we eat at the cafeteria.

They aren't really proven to be worse but many are believing that they are because of the sweeteners.

Consumed in large doses, some of the sweeteners can slightly damage your kidneys.
But you'd need to consume the diet cola at a rate where if it were ordinary cola, you'd get diabetes within a year.
