My companion cake and some other homemade presents

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is making homemade presents for people. Nothing beats getting a meaningful present one of your loved ones made just for you, right? Here's what I made for my fiance this year.

His birthday is only ten days before Christmas, so I'm putting those in here too. This was the cake I made him. It was my first time both making and working with fondant, so it didn't come out as nice as I wanted.

It doesn't look very cake-like in that last picture, so here's the birthday boy with it from another angle.

And his birthday present was Portal coasters. Made them from tiles I got from the hardware store.

And this was his Christmas present. He's a bassist, so I thought it'd be cool for him to have a custom strap for his bass. Gears of War is one of our favorite games, and has a cool looking, yet simple logo, so that's what I chose to paint on it. It was my first time painting anything other than flat colors, so I'm really happy with how it came out.

And I just had a picture with a bunch of warning signs from Portal on it for reference, sketched what I wanted on the tiles in pencil, and painted over that with acrylic paint. The borders were just made by putting tape over the tiles and painting over it. Pretty simple, just a little time consuming!

Now you guys can have coasters made with love too! I made a few more and am working on even more. I planned on selling them in sets of four, but I'll make you however many you want (of whichever signs you want) if you'd like to buy them. They're 3.8" by 3.8", coated in matte, waterproof varnish, and have rubber feet on the bottoms to keep them from sliding or scratching the surface of where you set them. I have these ones up on eBay, but just shoot me a PM if you want some.
