With all 32 precincts reporting, 76.6 percent had voted in favor of an amendment to the tribal constitution that would limit citizenship to descendants of "by blood" tribe members as listed on the federal Dawes Commission's rolls from more than 100 years ago. The commission, set up by a Congress bent on breaking up Indians' collective lands and parceling them out to tribal citizens, drew up two rolls, one listing Cherokees by blood and the other listing freedmen, a roll of blacks regardless of whether they had Indian blood... The petition drive for the ballot measure followed a March 2006 ruling by the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court that said an 1866 treaty assured freedmen descendants of tribal citizenship. Since then, more than 2,000 freedmen descendants have enrolled as citizens of the tribe.
http://news.yahoo.com/second-largest-u-indian-tribe-expels-slave-descendants-011650136.html
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - The nation's second-largest Indian tribe formally booted from membership thousands of descendants of black slaves who were brought to Oklahoma more than 170 years ago by Native American owners. The Cherokee nation voted after the Civil War to admit the slave descendants to the tribe. But on Monday, the Cherokee nation Supreme Court ruled that a 2007 tribal decision to kick the so-called "Freedmen" out of the tribe was proper. The controversy stems from a footnote in the brutal history of U.S. treatment of Native Americans. When many Indians were forced to move to what later became Oklahoma from the eastern U.S. in 1838, some who had owned plantations in the South brought along their slaves. Some 4,000 Indians died during the forced march, which became known as the "Trail of Tears." "And our ancestors carried the baggage," said Marilyn Vann, the Freedman leader who is a plaintiff in the legal battle. Officially, there are about 2,800 Freedmen, but another 3,500 have tribal membership applications pending, and there could be as many as 25,000 eligible to enter the tribe, according to Vann. The tribal court decision was announced one day before absentee ballots were to be mailed in the election of the Cherokee Principal Chief. "This is racism and apartheid in the 21st Century," said Vann, an engineer who lives in Oklahoma City. Spokesmen for the tribe did not respond when asked to comment. The move to exclude the Freedmen has rankled some African American members of Congress, which has jurisdiction over all Native American tribes in the country. A lawsuit challenging the Freedman's removal from the tribe has been pending in federal court in Washington, for about six years. As a sovereign nation, Cherokee Nation officials maintain that the tribe has the right to amend its constitutional membership requirements. Removal from the membership rolls means the Freedmen will no longer be eligible for free health care and other benefits such as education concessions.
way to be assholes cherokee nation!
Instead of kicking them out perhaps they should by paying reparations
Gotta love Native American politics.
Maybe we should resurrect Jackson to keep them in line. Trail of Tears 2.0: The Trail of Even More Tears
Who cares, best for them to get the fuck out of those crime ridden indian reservations anyways.
Instead of kicking them out perhaps they should by paying reparations
good reparations would be allowing those cherokee "freedmen" continued citizenship in the tribe
Instead of kicking them out perhaps they should by paying reparations
Why should the modern Cherokee be paying for something they didn't even do? I'd be pretty pissed if someone came knocking at my door expecting me to pay the debt of my dead grandfather who I have no personal relations with.
Instead of kicking them out perhaps they should by paying reparations
why [editline]24th August 2011[/editline]
Why should the modern Cherokee be paying for something they didn't even do? I'd be pretty pissed if someone came knocking at my door expecting me to pay the debt of my dead grandfather who I have no personal relations with.
it'd be like asking england to pay reparations to india for all that mean imperialism business sure it'd be nice to be getting the money for something you've never experienced and you never will experience but it'd be a bitch to pay for something your great great great grandfather did when you had no say in the matter
so after getting fucked in the ass by white people this is what native americans come down to gg america
Why should the modern Cherokee be paying for something they didn't even do?
"Cherokee Nation votes to expel freed slaves from tribe" this is happening now fyi.
"Cherokee Nation votes to expel freed slaves from tribe" this is happening now fyi.
"descendants of the people the Cherokee once owned as slaves." The people now being expelled were never slaves.
Natives are assholes.
"descendants of the people the Cherokee once owned as slaves." The people now being expelled were never slaves.
right but now they are being expelled so obviously they lose something and it wasn't even their fault.
Why should the modern Cherokee be paying for something they didn't even do?
I ask that every day the government wastes my money on huge prisons, stupid jets, and bombing foreign countries
thousands of descendants of black slaves who were brought to Oklahoma more than 170 years ago by Native American owners.
What the fuck? Native Americans were slave owners? Sure glossed over that one. [editline]25th August 2011[/editline] So why the plethora of rights for Native Americans and not African Americans? [editline]25th August 2011[/editline]
Removal from the membership rolls means the Freedmen will no longer be eligible for free health care and other benefits such as education concessions.
The descendants should move to Australia.
The descendants should move to Australia.
you think Australia's natives get treated any better?
I don't see what the problem is, they're expelling people from their tribe who aren't originally from their tribe. These people aren't descendants from Cherokee, they're not Cherokee so why should they be treated as such?
you think Australia's natives get treated any better?
What? When did I say we treated our natives well? Hell we give them less freedoms and the average lifespan is around 50 for them, whereas the typical non-aboriginal lifespan is 80. Thirty fucking years difference in the same country. My point was that as long as you are not an Aborginal and a citizen (or on your way) you'll be set. I take free health care, jobs and so forth for granted.
they're not Cherokee so why should they be treated as such?
because in 1866 they were brought into it and given tribal membership. the people who've come out of that are cherokee in everything except lineage but not a lot of cherokee people themselves are 100% of the same lineage. as far as i know they don't even share the same genetic make-up.
Where is the calvary? ALEXANDER MORRIS, WHERE ARE YOU?
A repressed race voting to expel another repressed race.
"Cherokee Nation votes to expel freed slaves from tribe" this is happening now fyi.
They should allow them in the tribe and not pay them.
I ask that every day the government wastes my money on huge prisons, stupid jets, and bombing foreign countries
I'd appreciate further explanation because you seem to have realized something that I haven't grasped.
I ask that every day the government wastes my money on huge prisons, stupid jets, and bombing foreign countries
This sounds quite odd coming from a Canadian.
This sounds quite odd coming from a Canadian.
A canadian under a conservative government
Well I realize that but you know... you would say that it is better than America amirite?
I ask that every day the government wastes my money on huge prisons, stupid jets, and bombing foreign countries
You're not a slave, though. And you get tons of government benefits.
You're not a slave, though.
and neither is anyone outside of mauritania.
