"The Wave" Megathread (La Dispute, Pianos Become the Teeth, Defeater, Touche Amore, Make Do and Mend
15 replies, posted
The Wave is a movement based on 5 bands who are all good friends that play post-hardcore and hardcore heavily emphasizing lyrics and songwriting. They're sort of the response to all of the generic "post-hardcore" that comes out of today's music scene. They've gotten a lot of attention in the "underground" music scene recently so I wouldn't be surprised if many of you have heard of one or more of these bands.
If you've heard and like one or more of these bands I recommend you check them all out because they're all really good in my opinion. If this isn't your type of music or you've heard and didn't like one of the bands, you most likely won't find much here. I recommend that anyone who's unfamiliar with The Wave at last give them a listen.
So here is (mostly) every Wave album released thus far, I got a little lazy with MDAM because I don't really know (or care tbh) much about them. I tried to include a couple songs for each album and similar artists to check out if you like any of the below. If you aren't familiar with any of the "Wave" bands, check them out in the interest of preventing this from becoming the La Dispute megathread.
LA DISPUTE
La Dispute is probably the most well-known of the five. As of this year they have two LPs and multiple EPs worth checking out.
Genre: Post-hardcore w/ some hardcore, emocore, and screamo influences.

Albums
Vancouver (2006)
The heaviest of their releases. Their most simple, straight up, raw, post-hardcore release. I'm not too fond of this EP but it isn't a bad starting place.
Future Wars
Untitled 7" (2008)
Their transitional release in which they transformed from any old post-hardcore band into their own entity. Only two songs but highly recommended.

Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega And Altair (2008)
La Dispute's highly acclaimed debut, in my opinion their best release. The lyrics are nearly perfect and the music is emotionally touching. The album feels nice and connected and has a wide variety of songs on it. A good place to start with these guys if you aren't going in chronological order.
Wildlife (2011)
Wildlife features a complete transformation of La Dispute's sound, instead of using instruments to convey the urgency of the vocals, the instrumentals are used as a backdrop to the story to set the mood and atmosphere of the different stories. They definitely slowed things down from Somewhere... in favor of better build-ups and progressions.

Splits
w/ Touche Amore (2010)
La Dispute and Touche Amore not only make a very good split but an effective collaboration between two of The Wave's fronting artists.
w/ Koji (2011)
La Dispute takes the back-seat on this split to promote Koji, a young indie-folk singer/songwriter.

The Here, Hear. Collection
A collection of softer La Dispute songs focused almost entirely on poetry and spoken-word (some written by the band, some not) it also features some of the only songs with Jordan Dreyer actually singing. The collection is currently spread over 3 albums but the band has said that as long as they are making music there will be more Here, Hear EPs.

PIANOS BECOME THE TEETH
The rising star in "The Wave". They've received a lot of attention due to their unique take on the post-rock/screamo fusion genre.
Genre: Post-rock/screamo with many elements of hardcore and post-hardcore.

Saltwater EP (2008)
The EP that first got them noticed for their post-rock/screamo combination with the song Houses We Die In. A solid debut EP.
Old Pride (2009)
Where they really perfected their unique take on the hardcore/post-rock combination, their debut LP.

Splits
w/ Ezra Joyce (2009)
I always thought this split only had one song because I could never find the other two but it really has three, two Ezra Joyce songs and one Pianos song thats really more of a collaboration between the two bands.
Creatures of Habit

DEFEATER
Defeater is a melodic hardcore band that focuses on telling a story with their lyrics and music.
Genre: Melodic-hardcore

Travels (2008)
Tells the tragic story of a boy who is unwanted by his parents and ends up killing his father, running away from home while his mother dies of a drug addiction, coming back, killing his brother and then himself. So its not a happy story, but Defeater tells it beautifully.
The Red, White, and Blues
Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (2011)
A continuation or rather a different viewpoint of the story of Travels. Empty Days goes deeper into the characters of the boy's family, particularly his brother. It is a double release and the second disc contains four acoustic songs, to contrast the mainly hardcore first disc and also to expand on the story.

TOUCHÉ AMORÉ
A rather spastic and short-winded (never over 2:30 long songs) hardcore/post-hardcore band that takes a lot of cues from older hardcore. A lot of fun to listen to.
Genre: Hardcore/post-hardcore with tinges of emo

Touché Amoré (2008)
Defined their sound but suffers from poor production and and extremely short length, but it is just their debut EP/Demo and with that in mind it is quite good.

...To The Beat of a Dead Horse (2009)
Where they truly perfected their sound, I'm not a big fan of the production on this either but the music is really quite good.

Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me (2011)
Most notably a huge improvement in production, otherwise another great effort from Touché and in my opinion their best. Yes there is a fucking song called "~".

Not quite the same as the split with La Dispute but has some good songs nonetheless.

MAKE DO AND MEND
The oddball of The Wave in that they aren't really that unique or similar to the other bands, they still make some solid post-hardcore with some pop-punk (good pop-punk) influences but I doubt too many people here will be interested in them. I don't have much by these guys so sorry if this section is incomplete.
Genre: Post-hardcore, pop-punk

End Measured Mile (2010)
Not too bad of a debut, its fun and there's a few standout tracks, they're still miles behind the rest of "The Wave" but this is a promising debut.

If you have any more information on any of these bands feel free to tell me and I will add it, I figured album title, year, and a few songs was good enough for albums but if you guys wanna see artwork and tracklists I can add those.
don't take this the wrong way but all of these artists are ieuehhh terrible?!

Remember when punk rock first showed up and then a bunch of guys that called themselves "new wave" tried to take punk and make it nice and fun and ruined it? It's happening again.

I don't care man, I like them and a lot of people here like them, just back up to the punk superthread and everything will be alright.

I think you've got the wrong idea about the whole thing anyways, they aren't trying to be a "new wave", The Wave is just their name, its a stupid name but it is what it is.
won't deny there are some songs that try to be so old school hardcore for the sake of getting "punx cred" that they aren't half bad, but most of them are abysmal like this new sikk single from the defeater boys!!

I like a select few pop punk bands but Chunk! No Captain Chunk is absolute shit.
And my first music related thread has already been derailed haha
Pianos become the teeth new album is amazing. Just recently found out about them.
I already knew about La dispute and Touche amore.
Some that really stick out for me is I'll get by and the combo of Liquid courage & Spine.

Yea its awesome, I like it even better than Old Pride. I agree that Spine and Liquid Courage are awesome, I'll Be Damned and Good Times are also two of my favorite tracks. I still think they still haven't topped Filial in terms of individual songs, that song is just amazing.
