• Let's talk: Global Warming

I know there are threads on this, but I just want to create my own thread to emphasize on my opinion. Before I talked to a professional on this topic (ie an unbiased scientist), I kept believing all the bullshit that they show on television about global warming. Basically, I thought it was real. Global Warming is an elusive topic. It's true, that it does basically exist, but it's far from what the media shells it out to be. It is a natural process, and even if we do in fact speed it up, it has absolutely no adverse affect on our "ozone layer causing us to have cancer bullshit insert here". Here's the story in the nutshell: Europe has cheaper and larger deposits of oil. US does not US realizes that they need to stay on the top Europe is thriving on this industry US propagandizes the "ALL OTHER OIL ARE DESTROYING US, I MEN TEH OZON LAER" Men in power push this all over the world European oil market gets fucked over There are huge restrictions imposed against the transportation of European oil The US market is thriving Thus the US now has now established control over the oil market. Their expensive and pointlessly "clean" oil is now in demand, simply because there is no legal alternative. The "Global Warming" creates MILLIONS of jobs for people. Debunking this will bring devastation to the market of clean energy. Good reads: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_global_warming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming_controversy Notice the fact that most organizations for global warming are seen as "unbiased" and are actually supported by American $? Well, there's my 12 cents
tl;dr America fucked the euro oil

Global Warming itself has some holes. Man Made Global Warming is bullshit. Al Gore in general needs to shut his pie hole.
lol global warming... i'll probably be dead (hopefully) by the time anything major happens.
Global Warming was made up by Al Gore because he has no friends and needs to fuel his expanding ego.
Oh god, this thread is going to go on for at least 10 pages and there will be much flaming and trolling. P.S. global warming is real.
It is real, but are we causing it? Prove it.
The earth was cooling for a while now its time to heat up then it will cool again and shit will be all fine and dandy nuff' said.
It's cold outside
We're just speeding it up, it's gonna happen eventually. Might as well happen now before those coastal cities get any bigger. Just more people to die.
Proof.
I don't think anyone is reading it :(
Oh god, this thread is going to go on for at least 10 pages and there will be much flaming and trolling. The "are people responsible" part is pretty much settled in the scientific community, the only real debate is between politicians and regular dudes (much like evolution). Climate scientists think it's caused by people by a vast majority. Since their job is to make accurate predictions and analyses of the earth's climate, I'm inclined to believe them. I'm sure I'll get plenty of negative ratings because that's not the way FP leans, but as someone who reads peer-reviewed science literature and makes a cursory effort to follow what's going on in the scientific community, that is absolutely the way scientists lean. They believed in global warming (in fact the idea was first suggested in the 1800s), and still do today, in increasingly larger numbers.

If you were one, would you not push your own agenda? Some scientists say that we Humans have little or nothing to do with contributing to global warming. But belief in global warming is the more profitable choice, or so it seems, and who doesn't want to make money? Even your graph says more climatologists say no or not sure than publicized climatologists, does that not say something?

You really think the climate denial industry is bigger than the global warming industry today?
Drill for oil in Alaska Drill for oil in Alaska Drill for oil in Alaska Drill for oil in Alaska Oh and by the way drill for oil in Alaska. It would solve half of our problems.
Al Gore is trying to tel me that the .035 - .04% of the atmosphere that is CO2 is the cause of massive climate change. Its really a feat that only Superman and Dr. Evil would be capable of doing. To hell with CO2. I'm more worried about other pollutant gases which cause actual harm. Take Sulfur Dioxide (S02) for example.

I think when people get into these arguments it's purely a political one. People focus too much on trying to disprove global warming or climate change but forget the wider picture -Overdependence on fossil fuels is bad -Polluting the environment... what good is coming out of that? -This world is going to fuck itself over bad if abusive industrial practices aren't stopped. I mean we got a river that can catch on fire in Cleveland. There are some serious things wrong with our current practices.
Of course climatologists are going to agree with global warming. If you were one, would you not push your own agenda?
What are you talking about? Their "agenda" is to DO SCIENCE TO FIND OUT THINGS ABOUT THE CLIMATE Do you think biologists have an "evolution agenda" and physicists have a "gravity agenda?" and they're all trying to ~hide the truth~? How does that make any sense at all? Climatologists don't become successful by lying to people, they become successful by making accurate predictions. Because they're scientists. Do you have any idea what extents the Bush administration went to in order to suppress climate research that showed this stuff because they didn't want to deal with it? All the funding that was cut? If they were in it to make money they wouldn't have been pushing climate change at all during the Bush era (actually, they wouldn't have become scientists, but you know that), because the solution effects massive economic damage all over the world, and nobody wants that, despite your conspiracy theories. Not the government, not corporations, not anyone who thinks immediate financial security should always take priority over anything else.
Even your graph says more climatologists say no or not sure than publicized climatologists, does that not say something?
No it doesn't. It says "active publishers," which means "scientists who are actively doing (and thusly publishing) research." As opposed to scientists who are retired, or are working as professors, and no longer involved in current research.
as I've posted in another of these threads, they've already figured out what causes global warming
CO2 goes up as temperature goes up, not the other way around.
Natural cycles, etc., etc....
I would start posting arguments but TH89's here so do not fear. Go go spe-Th89.
