I love space and I find it so interesting. I dream of becoming an astronaut and fly up to the ISS or walk on the moon. Why would NASA retire and let Russia continue on with space travel. None of this makes sense to me.

Lack of funding i suppose
Lack of funding
People are greedy
I was talking to aguy who was likeMY TAX DOLLRS ARE GOING TO SEND STUPID ROBOTS TO MARS - FAIL JUST FAIL NASA AJFCVAPCAPCJQ
ect...
Wait what? NASA is stopping exploration? :byodood:
Wait what? NASA is stopping exploration? :byodood:
This. ._.
NASA is much like me, detonations happen on the launchpad.
NASA isn't retiring. The space shuttle program is what is retiring.
According to President Obama's plan, NASA will put a man on Mars and on an asteroid.
Haven't heard about nasa retiring for some reason, sucks though
I'm damn near positive that NASA isn't going anywhere, it's just the shuttles that are being retired and replaced. That's the reason of why Bush forced so much stuff regarding NASA through, so Obama and his Administration would have a hard time stopping it and Bush was the reason why we have plans to go to Mars and back to the Moon.
Don't post treads like this without evidince

Wouldn't that be more expensive than a space shuttle?
I think they should focus more money to NASA, fuck the greedy we can send them on a 1 way mission.

If we send people to Mars, it is going to be a one way trip. It would be cheaper to send 20 men there then bring 4 back.
They're getting to old and they need their social security benefits.
It's amazing how ignorant the human race is, we'll even disregard exploration of the only place we have left to go. (I know this isn't the case here, but there's people who say astronomy is evil. Ignorant fools, they are.)
Carl Sagan would not be happy for those people.
You scared me for a bit.

the space shuttle is outdated anyways. It needs to be replaced as we've got a lot better ways of getting to space. Ultimately we need a single stage to orbit vehicle that can also land. It's the most effective way. Vertical take off is, in my opinion, pretty stupid unless you're in a rotary vehicle (heli).

What we need is a damn space elevator and fusion energy, but a man can wish, can't he?
Not trying to say that a single stage rocket is impossible, and I totally agree. I even think they're replacing it with something like that.
NASA isn't retiring, an agency can't retire. The shuttle is what's retiring.
OP, don't go scaring me like that again
You made me spit out my chocolate milk
they should sell all the shuttles to american airlines and then use the money to fly to the moon in a pressurized piper super cub with thrusters

Pretty much says it all.
I'm pretty sure there's nothing else for NASA to visit after the moon. Mars would be awesome but in today's economy it would just be too much.

They've got a few competing plans yeah. Space elevator would be nice too.
I don't think NASA will ever retire completely
Space will still be explored, just by Private Companies. But until we find a way into Space that doesn't burn about 100 cars worth of Fuel every minute NASA will have to hold off on Space.

You do realize we launch hundreds of things every year, right? Just because the space shuttle is retiring doesn't mean that NASA is stopping other work.
Nasa is useless and lies to us

This is why I love George W. Bush. He actually helped advance the greater good of humanity and because he couldn't manage other shit got the label of being a complete retard. In my opinion he didn't fuck up everything. He's in the same situation Obama is in, he's doing his best, fucking up in places and dealing with a very poor approval rating.

Also this makes me think, what are they gonna do with the used shuttles? Because if we get a hold of a few of them we could have our own space station, or maybe space battles :v:

I read a thing a while ago that said that NASA is selling the old space shuttles.
But a space shuttle, get a spare engine free.
Sadly, they cost Around $100 million dollars and the only people who they were really selling them to were museums.
