Is it common knowledge that a 6-legged octopus is rare? I'm not sure how foreigners would of known otherwise.

Can't really blame them. I had no idea there was such a thing as a hexapus, let alone that they were an incredibly rare subspecies. What do I look like, an ocean biologist? I'd have just assumed it was mutated, or injured, or even more likely, that I most certainly didn't want to smash and eat any squishy sea blob, regardless of how many legs it had or didn't have.

They found something cool, and they followed the local tradition of how you kill and eat an octopus.
There was no "THIS SPECIAL THING, WE SMASH IT RAWR" they just thought "Oh wow, this is pretty cool. Let's take a photo and go eat it because that's what people do here!"
