Is Facebook a passing fad? Nearly half of Americans think so
(Mashable) -- Nearly half of Americans believe that popular social-networking site Facebook is merely a passing fad, a new study suggests.
A poll conducted by the Associated Press and CNBC found that 46% of respondents think Facebook will fade away as new platforms come along in the future. However, about 43% believe the site will likely be successful for the long haul.
The study was conducted among 1,000 Americans ages 18 and over, with a margin of error of 3.9%.
Not on Facebook? Tell us why.
The survey comes as Facebook readies for its initial public offering later this week. The company confirmed on Tuesday that shares will be priced between $34 and $38, with the company's valuation at more than $100 billion
About 50% of respondents said they believe the expected stock market value is overvalued, while only 3% said the projection is undervalued. About 32% said that the number is valued fairly by the market. The remaining percentage either didn't know or declined to answer.
The study also asked respondents if buying Facebook shares would be a good investment that would outperform other investments — about 51% believed it would be a good investment, while 31% disagreed.
As for whether or not people believe 28-year-old Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg can run a large publicly traded company, only 18% said they were extremely confident. About 40% said they were somewhat confident and 20% said they weren't confident at all. Respondents cited age as helping his ability to run the company (21%) compared to hurting his ability (11%).
Do you think Facebook is just a passing fad? Let us know your opinion in the comments.
uh obviously it will out in a few years if were lucky
I don't use Facebook because the layout is hard to navigate and confusing. But I think Facebook is here for the long haul, it has almost a billion people registered with active growth. Hmm kind of like Windows, its really shitty but it has the most applications.

Why does that make us lucky?
I think it is going to be hard to fade out when 1 in 8 people on the planet has a facebook account.
I hope Facebook doesn't go through numerous unnecessary changes like Myspace did. That was one of the reasons why Myspace died out.
I don't really think it will, I mean people are seriously invested in it with shit tons of photos and personal info, and with all your friends already there what incentive is there to leave? and I know FP is going to disagree with me but is there anywhere that does it better and has plenty of people using it? What alternatives would you recommend?
Why does that make us lucky?
Because his opinion is superior to the 1,000,000,000 people who use it

I don't see it leaving in the next 10 years. Then again, technology is always changing, so who knows what could be next.

They change the damn format at least once a year.
Facebook itself may be, but social media like it most definitely is not.

Look at you sticking it to the mainstream and whatnot.
1000 People = "Nearly half of Americans"
I'll take this with more than a grain of salt when the survey base is a tad larger.
It will never die out. People still use linkedin and that site sucks.

Never heard of that site

Welcome to statistics and being able to get any point across with them.
The ones with small numbers should be avoided, like those products advertised as "peoples favourite" based on a poll of 200 people or something.
passing fad only to the extent that it will fade away once the internet and technology develops further.

Its "professional" social networking, mostly for people to keep a public record of what they do and how important they are in their chosen field.

Seems I posted a minute too late, already one
I like Facebook, and use it often

Plus, summer is coming up (BIKINI PICS TO FAP TO)
I really doubt it, I and my friends use it everyday it's pretty much a tool to us to keep up to date and I doubt it'll be going anywhere for a while seeing as 1 billion people use it.
Most of you on here are like "I WISH IT DIED SOON", I must ask, do you guys have any friends that use it or do you have friends at all?
It's going to die, but not soon. It way too well rooted in our society for it to disappear now. Everyone I know has a Facebook account.
Why does that make us lucky?
for being the number 1 visited site in the world, it sure is sloppy and poorly made
It's also one of the worst social networks out there, well at least several other social networks are much better designed, simpler, elegant, innovative, etc.

nice try with the smartass comment there, but most people agree the facebook layout and design is bad, they just don't want to go to a whole new site, re-add everyone from facebook, convince everyone from facebook to join actually, etc
Social networks cannot be replaced as easily as other stuff

I found google+ harder to get around than facebook, if you are having a hard time browsing it just use mobile facebook, isn't that hard.

can people please stop missing the point completely?

The only real competition with a Windows operating system is Linux. OSX is just ugly hipster trash.

relevance?
Probably not. Facebook will continue to innovate and so will maintain monopoly on social networking. Kind of like Windows, it's so big that it pretty much can't be beaten. Even with major competitors like Apple.
Not nearly as much of a fad as Twitter.
Or as much of a stupid idea that somehow saw success.

twitter is useful for information, I'd say it's a social news aggregate site, you go there for content, alerts, and what is happening around the world
facebook is logging in to be confronted by drunk photos, annoying or quasi-spam updates, and then finally your actual close friends
