Last thread was posted in Creationism by mistake, so I'm posting it where it belongs. http://soundcloud.com/frykth/ash-and-death-1 Still needs a lot of work, but the basic stuff is down. What do you guys think so far?
I like the sound
Very Opeth-y. Awesome
Reminds me alot of the guitar parts in 28 days later. Very awesome. Have you been using FL for long? How long did this song take you?
Thanks alot for the responses! I've been using FL for around seven years. It's great for making ideas, and "blueprints". This song took 2-3 hours to get all the basic stuff down. After that I've just gone in and changed some parts, added some basslines, done a little mixing etc. So I'd say 5 hours all together. [editline]28th December 2011[/editline] I did a bit more work on it right now; http://soundcloud.com/frykth/ash-and-death-1
I will admit, Plat's saying "Very Opeth-y" convinced me to give it a listen, and I will have to agree with him. Listening to the intro, I was expecting the song to pull a The Funeral Portrait and delve into a bad-ass riff. While that didn't exactly happen, the part that it did transition to was very interesting. I particularly enjoy when the drumbeat enters the scene around 1:00. That part sounds like something Opeth would do if they were to take on a slightly industrial influence. The riff there is very nice, though. Especially at 1:30, where you get the eighth note kick staying - very reminiscent of Opeth. I also like the sound of splashes you have going on, making it sound almost like a shaker. The interlude at 2:00 is beautiful. I really enjoy that guitar tone and the melody it's playing. The power of the piano's chords at 2:20 is very... bleak. Dark and boding. Again, very Opeth-like. If you haven't guessed yet, you're going to be reading Opeth a lot in this post. The reverse cymbal leading into the pounding eighth-note kicks at 3:15 only further darkens the tone, and I love it. The change in riff at 3:35 is beautifully executed, and the emphasis of those notes (with the melody in the background) has the same power that the piano chords did earlier in the song. The exit is a beautiful release of the tension that the previous parts were building. All in all, it's a beautifully dark and moody piece, and I absolutely love it. I could easily sit and listen to an entire album of tracks like this, while sitting on a simple wooden chair in the middle of an empty room, completely expunged of light with the exception of a single candle burning on a simple wooden table an arms' length away from me. Honestly, the only issue I have is the transition at 0:29 is very jarring. I don't know how you could remedy it, but something needs to be done about that.
